Annotation: The purpose of this project was to develop and demonstrate effective intervention strategies for the 10–15 year age group that can be carried out within a school-based comprehensive health care system to reduce the occurrence of premature and unprotected sexual intercourse in adolescents. More than 300 10-year-old children and their parents enrolled to receive annual health maintenance evaluations and a series of activities to enhance parent-child communication, parental knowledge of adolescent social and sexual development, and problem-solving and decision-making skills. Annotation: This report records how, in a pilot program conducted by the Pacific Business Group on Health (PBGH), in partnership with the California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative (CMQCC), three hospitals in the state of California were able to lower the rate of low-risk first-time Cesarian sections by 20% in one year. Subsequently, the California Health Care Foundation (CHCF) funded a state-wide initiative built on the lessons learned to lower the rate of unnecessary Cesarian section births from 26.0% to 22.9 %, between 2015 and 2020. Initiatives to accomplish this goal included collecting and sharing accurate data, providing toolkits to providers, ensuring patient engagement, and supporting policies and payment/purchaser requirements. Annotation: This literature review analyses interventions that target minority (African-American and Hispanic) women, who are less likely to meet their breastfeeding goals. It concludes that policy and community level interventions delivered through WIC, healthcare facilities, and community agencies are likely to improve breastfeeding outcomes among women of color, and that further research is recommended strongly recommended to conduct large scale implementation research studies addressesing how to strengthen the different health and social environments surrounding women of color in the U.S. to improving their BF outcomes.
