Project Thrive

Annotation: Project Thrive is a public policy analysis and education initiative to promote healthy child development and to provide policy support to the State Early Childhood Comprehensive Systems (ECCS) initiatives funded by the Maternal and Child Health Bureau. It focuses on integrated high-quality health care and medical homes; early care and education; social-emotional and mental health programs; family support; and parenting education. It provides Webinars and conference calls; conferences and meetings; and downloadable resources and materials. It is funded through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Maternal and Child Health Bureau.

Quality Improvement Center on Early Childhood (QIC-EC )

Annotation: The Quality Improvement Center on Early Childhood (QIC-EC) was established to address the nation's need to find effective approaches for reducing the likelihood of abuse and neglect of young children form birth to age five. The Center for the Study of Social Policy operates the center with its partners Zero to Three: National Center for Infants, Toddlers and Families and the National Alliance of Children's Trust and Prevention Funds.

SIUC Head Start

Annotation: SIUC Head Start is a program operated by Southern Illinois University Carbondale on a federal grant. The program is designed to serve children three to five years of age from families qualifying for Head Start throughout Jackson and Williamson Counties. Head Start helps all children succeed by providing a comprehensive program that provides children with activities that help them grow mentally, socially, emotionally and physically.

Smart Start Oklahoma

Annotation: Smart Start is Oklahoma's statewide early childhood initiative. The Board also serves as the state's Early Childhood Advisory Council. Through a shared commitment, active collaboration and innovative leadership, Smart Start Oklahoma seeks to provide better opportunities to the children and families in the state. Four key strategies guide efforts toward achieving the goal of giving Oklahoma's children a smart start: (1) community initiatives respond to the needs of children and families by leveraging local support and resources to meet identified needs, (2) public engagement educates Oklahoma on the importance of the early years, (3) resource development commits resources at both the state and community level with increased public and private funding devoted to early childhood services, and (4) public policy advocacy to improve support for young children and their families.

Southern Early Childhood Association (SECA)

Annotation: The Southern Early Childhood Association (SECA), formerly the Southern Association on Children Under Six, serves the interests of professionals and paraprofessionals through its affiliates in 14 southern states. Members include university researchers and teacher educators, Head Start teachers and administrators, school administrators, proprietors of nursery schools and child care centers, and kindergarten, nursery school, and child care teachers. Publications include a quarterly journal, Dimensions of Early Childhood, a newsletter and a catalog. Some materials are available in Spanish. The association also provides training sessions and sponsors an annual conference.

State Early Childhood Policy Technical Assistance Network (SECPTAN)

Annotation: The State Early Childhood Policy Technical Assistance Network (SECPTAN) is a network of early childhood researchers, consultants, policymakers, and practitioners that provide evidence-based technical assistance to state decision makers on policy issues. The network provides a variety of reports, resource briefs, and other documents on early childhood initiatives and school readiness (these can be downloaded in pdf format from the Web site) SECPTAN also hosts workshops and provides presentations which can be downloaded for information and/or replication.

Technical Assistance Center on Social Emotional Intervention for Young Children (TACSEI)

Annotation: The Technical Assistance Center on Social Emotional Intervention for Young Children (TACSEI) takes the research that shows which practices improve the social-emotional outcomes for young children with, or at risk for, delays or disabilities and creates products and resources to help decision-makers, caregivers, and service providers apply these best practices in the work they do every day. Resources available on the website include articles, papers, workshops, presentations, videos, and other materials and tools. The site also provides information on individualized interventions, systems and procedures, and the pyramid model for supporting social emotional competence in infants and young children. TACSEI is a five-year grant made possible by the U.S. Department of Education.

Tooth Talk

Annotation: A collaboration of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the NC Division of Public Health Oral Health Section, Tooth Talk is a web site that serves as a clearinghouse of good tips, resources parents will love, up-to-date expert answers to frequently asked questions and super-short, super-helpful videos designed to help professionals support parents in protecting kids’ healthy smiles. Tooth Talk is part of the Brushing Is Fun, Start By Age 1 initiative, and is funded by a grant from The Duke Endowment through the Foundation for Health Leadership & Innovation.

U.S. Department of Agriculture, National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA)

Annotation: The National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) -- formerly the Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service (CSREES) -- is an agency within the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) charged with advancing knowledge for agriculture, the environment, human health and well-being, and communities by supporting research, education, and extension programs in the Land-Grant University System and other partner organizations. NIFA helps fund research, education, and extension services at the state and local level, and provides program leadership in these areas. Annotation: NCAST-AVENUW is a self-sustaining program at the University of Washington affiliated with the School of Nursing and the Center on Human Development and Disability. The program is designed to give professionals, parents and other caregivers the knowledge and skills to provide nurturing environments for young children. NCAST-AVENUW develops and disseminates innovative research-based products and training programs for practitioners and researchers in many disciplines and settings which can be used with typically developing children, those at risk for developmental delays, and those diagnosed with special health needs.
