Annotation: The Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) is a component of the Department of Justice. The bureau is the nation's primary source for criminal justice statistics. Activities include collecting, analyzing, publishing, and disseminating information on crime, criminal offenders, victims of crime, and the operation of justice systems at all levels of government. The data collected by the bureau is used by Federal, State, and local policymakers in combating crime and ensuring that justice is both efficient and evenhanded.
