National Center for Cultural Competence (NCCC)

Annotation: The purpose of the National Center for Cultural Competence (NCCC) is to increase the capacity of health and mental health programs to design, implement, and evaluate culturally and linguistically competent service delivery systems. The Center provides technical assistance and consultation, networking opportunities, and information for health professionals and policymakers about designing, implementing, and evaluating culturally competent health services, including services for children with special health care needs and their families. Resources and publications include policy briefs, checklists, self assessments, promising practices, distance learning, and conference information. The center's Web site includes a Spanish language portal for families.

National Center for Education in Maternal and Child Health (NCEMCH)

Annotation: The National Center for Education in Maternal and Child Health (NCEMCH) leads a national effort to collect, develop, and disseminate information and educational materials on maternal and child health. It collaborates with public agencies, voluntary and professional organizations, research and training programs, policy centers, and others to advance education and program and policy development in maternal and child health. The center maintains a reference collection of educational materials documenting the last 100 years of maternal and child health and publishes a variety of guides, directories, bibliographies, and newsletters. Additionally, subject specialists implement special projects in support of federal initiatives. NCEMCH houses on-line information on programs and products from the Special Projects of Regional and National Significance (SPRANS) and other projects supported by the Maternal and Child Health Bureau. The Center's Web site contains databases, bibliographies on maternal and child health topics, lists of selected organizations and MCHB-funded projects, information about Center projects, and selected full-text publications. Selected records from the Center's bibliographic database are available for online retrieval through the Center database MCHLine(r) and also through the Combined Health Information Database (CHID), available on the World Wide Web. The NCEMCH organization database is included on the DIRLINE database at the National Library of Medicine. Services to consumers and health professionals include referrals, reference information, and publications. NCEMCH publishes a weekly electronic newsletter, MCH Alert, which provides timely MCH research and findings, policy developments, information about recently released publications, new programs and initiatives, and conferences affecting the MCH community.

National HPV and Cervical Cancer Prevention Resource Center

Annotation: The National HPV and Cervical Cancer Prevention Resource Center, created by the American Social Health Association (ASHA), focuses on collecting, summarizing, and disseminating information on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of HPV and the prevention of cervical cancer. National Prevention Information Network (NPIN)

Annotation: The National Prevention Information Network (NPIN) is the U.S. reference and referral service for information on HIV/AIDS, viral hepatitis, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and tuberculosis (TB). NPIN is a clearinghouse and collaborative community that collects and disseminates data and materials and enables prevention professionals on the international, national, state, and local levels to connect and share. Services are designed to facilitate program collaboration in sharing information, resources, published materials, research, and trends among the four diseases. Services include a social community, a database of providers, education materials, funding opportunities, research on health communication campaigns, campaign planning resources, training resources, and digital media tools.

National Rehabilitation Information Center (NARIC)

Annotation: The National Rehabilitation Information Center (NARIC) is the library of the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR). NARIC collects, catalogs, and disseminates the articles, reports, curricula, guides, and other publications and products of the research projects funded by NIDRR. These projects focus on a wide range of issues, including technology, health and function, independent living, and capacity building. The website content can be viewed in English or Spanish.

National Resource Center for Health and Safety in Child Care and Early Education (NRC)

Annotation: The National Resource Center for Health and Safety in Child Care and Early Education (NRC) at the University of Colorado Denver promotes health and safety in out-of-home child care settings throughout the nation. National School Safety Center (NSSC)

Annotation: The National School Safety Center (NSSC) serves as an advocate for safe, secure and peaceful schools worldwide and as a catalyst for the prevention of school crime and violence. Emphasis is placed on the prevention of school crime and violence, and on programs to improve student attendance, achievement, and school climate. The center provides consultation and technical assistance, offers a school safety assessment program, sponsors conferences, workshops, and training seminars, and produces videotapes and publications (including news updates and resource papers).

National Sudden and Unexpected Infant/Child Death and Pregnancy Loss Program Support Center (NSIDPSC)

Annotation: The National SIDS Sudden Unexpected Infant/Child Death and Pregnancy Loss Program Support Center (PSC), funded by the U.S. Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB), helps professionals and organizations at the local, state, regional, and national levels to initiate, expand, or improve their risk-reduction education and bereavement support programming. PSC provides information, training, and educational materials for families and for professionals. Programs include the African American Faith-Based Bereavement Support Initiative, the Healthy Child Care America Back to Sleep Train the Trainer Campaign, continuing education programs for nurses and pharmacists, and the Kicks Count campaign aimed at reducing stillbirths.

National Women's Health Information Center (NWHIC)

Annotation: The National Women's Health Information Center (NWHIC) is a service of the Office on Women's Health (OWH) in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. NWHIC provides a gateway to a wide variety of federal and other women's health information resources. Through its toll-free call center and Web site, NWHIC helps individuals in ordering, linking to, and downloading women's health-related material developed by the Department of Health and Human Services, other federal agencies, and private sector sources; some materials are available in Spanish. To reach NWHIC's breastfeeding helpline, dial 800/994-9662. NWHIC also provides a Web site for girls at www.girlshealth.gov and Quick Health Data Online, formerly the National Women's Health Indicators Database (NWHID), a free online tool containing extensive national health data from the year 2000 to the present. The database provides access to a breakdown of statistics on a national, regional, state and county level for various topics. National Youth Sports Safety Foundation (NYSSF)

Annotation: The National Youth Sports Safety Foundation, formerly the National Youth Sports Foundation for the Prevention of Athletic Injuries, is a nonprofit educational organization established in1989 dedicated to reducing the number and severity of injuries youth sustain in sports and fitness activities through the education o f health professionals, program administrators, coaches, parents and athletes. At the heart of the Foundation's mission is a commitment to promote the healthy development of youth, and to keep them physically active and in sports for life. The foundation serves as an educational resource and its publications include a quarterly newsletter , the Yearbook of Youth Sports Safety, injury fact sheets, resource sheets and guidelines. The Foundation is the lead organization for National Youth Sports Safety Month, a national health event to promote safety in sports activities. A publications list is available.

North American Menopause Society (NAMS)

Annotation: The North American Menopause Society (NAMS) is a nonprofit organization that promotes the health and quality of life of women through an understanding of menopause. NAMS publishes materials for professionals and consumers. The Society also develops curriculum materials, surveys and questionnaires, position statements, and recommended reading lists, and publishes book reviews of publications about menopause. Parents Helping Parents (PHP)

Annotation: Parents Helping Parents (PHP) is a nonprofit, family resource center that benefits children with special needs. This includes children of all ages (birth through life) and all backgrounds who have a need for special services due to any special need, including but not limited to illness, cancer, accidents, birth defects, neurological conditions, premature birth, learning or physical disabilities, mental health issues, and attention deficit (hyperactivity) disorder. PHP's mission is to help children with special needs receive the resources, love, hope, respect, health care, education, and other services they need to reach their full potential by providing them with strong families, dedicated professionals, and responsive systems to serve them. PHP provides assistive technology services through its iTech Center, hosts an online resource directory, and maintains the PHP Community Disability Library, which includes an online catalog.

Provincial IODE Genetics Resource Centre

Annotation: The Provincial IODE Genetics Resource Centre, previously known as the Canadian Association of Genetic Counselors (CAGC), publishes the Canadian Directory of Genetic Support Groups, a resource guide for families and professionals seeking information on genetic support groups in Canada. The organization also provides reference information on genetic disorders. Some materials are available in French. The organization welcomes student inquiries and their services are free.

Public Health Image Library (PHIL)

RTI-UNC Evidence-based Practice Center (RTI-UNC EPC)

Annotation: The RTI-UNC Evidence-based Practice Center (EPC) produces systematic reviews and analyses of the scientific evidence (evidence reports and updates) on a variety of health care and health policy topics. It also builds on these reports to create materials and messages for patients and clinicians relating to health care decisions. EPC personnel also conduct research into the best practices and methods for conducting reviews of the scientific literature. The center prepares AHRQ reports and technology assessments as well as reports for other public and private health care organizations on topics of their choosing. Center staff also design and conduct customized literature searches and quantitative analyses. The Center is one of 13 EPCs sponsored by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).

San Francisco Injury Center (SFIC)

Annotation: The San Francisco Injury Center is one of ten national Injury Control Research Centers designated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The mission of the SFIC is to expand knowledge in the areas of acute care for traumatized individuals and to promote injury prevention strategies and policy advocacy efforts among local, regional, and national audiences. Current research in the area of acute care brings together multidisciplinary faculty, staff and students from throughout the UCSF Health Sciences Campus. Prevention and policy activities are carried out in collaboration with the Trauma Foundation through support of the Injury Prevention Library, injury surveillance, conferences, educational programs and fellowships. Services provided to consumers include referrals, publications, and reference information. The organization publishes a newsletter.

Sudden Infant Death Services (SIDS) of Illinois

Annotation: Sudden Infant Death Services of Illinois (SIDS of Illinois) is dedicated to the prevention and eventual elimination of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and other causes of infant death through through educational initiatives stressing proven risk reduction strategies. Activities include reducing infant mortality by decreasing the incidence of infant deaths due to SIDS, accidental suffocation, overlay, entrapment, metabolic disorders, and other accidental causes; improving the quantity and quality of comprehensive, family-centered bereavement services for those impacted by a sudden pediatric death; and training professionals throughout Illinois who are likely to encounter cases of sudden pediatric death to better assist newly grieving families. Information on services and materials are available from the Web site for parents, children, friends, grandparents, as well as professionals.

ThinkFirst National Injury Prevention Foundation (ThinkFirst)

Annotation: A collaboration of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the NC Division of Public Health Oral Health Section, Tooth Talk is a web site that serves as a clearinghouse of good tips, resources parents will love, up-to-date expert answers to frequently asked questions and super-short, super-helpful videos designed to help professionals support parents in protecting kids’ healthy smiles. Tooth Talk is part of the Brushing Is Fun, Start By Age 1 initiative, and is funded by a grant from The Duke Endowment through the Foundation for Health Leadership & Innovation.

University of Alabama at Birmingham Injury Control Research Center (UAB ICRC)

Annotation: The Injury Control Research Center at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB ICRC) strives to help the nation, and especially the southeastern region, achieve an accelerated reduction in injury-related morbidity, mortality, and disability. As one of eleven national injury control research centers designated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the UAB ICRC has selected rehabilitation research as its unique niche. The Center works to improve rehabilitation practices that help people with injuries achieve their maximum potential, and to stimulate faculty development in rehabilitation and related areas. In addition, the UAB ICRC coordinates research and community programs which incorporate other facets of injury control, including biomechanics, health promotion and disease prevention, acute care and epidemiology. Within UAB's Schools of Engineering and Public Health, the ICRC sponsors graduate and undergraduate level courses which focus on many aspects of injury prevention and control. Center publications include a semi-annual newsletter (The Informer) and a report of research findings published every two years. The UAB ICRC also sponsors conferences, workshops, training seminars and monthly research updates for funded projects and Center-related research initiatives.
