Harborview Injury Prevention and Research Center (HIPRC)

Annotation: The Harborview Injury Prevention and Research Center (HIPRC) is one of 10 national injury control centers designated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Research projects include the development of programs that prevent falls among the elderly and train health care providers to recognize domestic violence, use of state-of-the-art epidemiology to determine injury risk factors, use of biomechanics to study hard tissue trauma, evaluation of the effectiveness of helmets in preventing different types of recreation-related head injuries, and new methods for assessing injured patients. The center also hosts a list service, offers seminars, and conducts a program promoting the safe storage of handguns. The center offers publications and reference information to consumers.

Harvard Injury Control Research Center (HICRC)

Annotation: The Harvard Injury Control Research Center is a multidisciplinary unit based at the Harvard School of Public Health. The Center's theme "Protecting Vulnerable Populations" is accomplished through applied research projects, conferences training activities, and communications with injury control professionals, journalists and reporters, opinion leaders, policymakers, and the public. HICRC has important collaborative ties with scientists at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, the Education Development Center, the Harvard Medical School, the Harvard Center for Risk Analysis, the six level-1 trauma centers in Massachusetts, Boston University School of Public Health and the New England Medical Center. HICRC resources are devoted to two priority issues: transportation safety and violence prevention. The Center sponsors workshops, conferences, and training seminars. Services to consumers include publications and reference information.

Health Literacy Media (HLM)

Annotation: Health Literacy Media (HLM, formerly Health Literacy Missouri) advocates for health literacy issues at the state and national level, working to effect policy change, inform stakeholders, and support and initiate grassroots and community activities. HLM provides fee-based services, programs, and materials to corporations, organizations, and health professionals. Services include a speakers bureau, readability services, field-testing of translated materials, training, program evaluation, printed and online material, local media communications, and building capacity for statewide initiatives.

Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy (JHUCIRP)

Annotation: The Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy, one of eleven national injury control centers designated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is dedicated to high quality research that informs the establishment of programs and policies aimed at controlling the incidence, severity and consequences of injuries; the application of this research through professional practice; and the integration of research and practice with the education of future research scientists and practitioners in injury control. The Center embraces a public health approach to injury control and uses it as a framework to organize and prioritize its activities in the areas of primary prevention, acute care, and rehabilitation. Educational programs include the week long Summer Institute on Injury, academic courses, and special workshops. The Center also provides education and assistance on injury control to legislators, health departments, community agencies and the public. Services to consumers include referrals, publications and reference information.

Maternal Mental Health NOW

National Alliance for Hispanic Health (NAHH)

Annotation: The National Alliance for Hispanic Health (NAHH) is a network of Hispanic health and human service providers that focuses on improving the health and well being of Hispanics. The alliance maintains the National Hispanic Family Health Helpline (866-783-2645) which offers Hispanic consumers free reliable and confidential health information in Spanish and English.Services to consumers includes referrals to local sources of information and medical services, inquiry responses, publications, and reference information.

National Association of EMS Physicians (NAEMSP)

Annotation: The National Association of EMS Physicians (NAEMSP) has the mission to foster excellence and provide medical leadership so that all individual and communities receive quality out-of-hospital emergency medical services. The association develops guidelines and strategies to prevent discomfort, disability, and death in the community. It provides electronic communications, an EMS literature retrieval service, and a comprehensive network for all professionals servicing the EMS industry. National Association of State EMS Officials (NASEMSD)

Annotation: The National Association of State EMS Directors (NASEMSD) brings together the emergency medical services (EMS) directors of each state, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. territories. The association provides leadership in developing effective emergency medical systems and helps to formulate national EMS policy. It also sponsors an annual conference, and maintains databases on U.S. ambulance services and on physicians who provide medical direction to EMS provider agencies.

National Center for Disaster Preparedness (NCDP)

Annotation: The National Center for Disaster Preparedness (NCDP) serves as a national resource in disaster and terrorism readiness. The NCDP, which includes the CDC-funded Academic Centers for Public Health Preparedness (initiated prior to the attacks of September 11), works with other academic institutions, advocacy organizations, and public policy institutions to provide bioterrorism curriculum development, training for public health professionals, crisis-response mechanisms, surveillance models, preparedness standards, public policy analysis, and research methodologies in efforts to increase the nation's capacity to prevent and respond to terrorism and enhance disaster preparedness.

National Center for Prosecution of Child Abuse (NCPCA)

Annotation: Founded in 1985 by the American Prosecutors Research Institute in response to a dramatic increase in reported child abuse cases, the National Center for Prosecution of Child Abuse (NCPCA) works to improve the investigation and prosecution of child abuse through court reform, professional specialization, and interagency coordination. The center provides training and technical assistance, research services, a national network of child abuse prosecutors (through the National District Attorneys Association), and a clearinghouse on case law, court reforms, legislative initiatives, and trial strategies. Publications include a comprehensive manual, Investigation and Prosecution of Child Abuse, and a monthly newsletter, Update.

National Center on Early Childhood Development, Teaching, and Learning (ECDTL)

Annotation: The National Center on Early Childhood Development, Teaching, and Learning (ECDTL) supports meaningful learning for children and the early educators who support them. The center is funded and guided by the U.S. Office of Head Start and the U.S. Office of Child Care to promote excellence across all ECE programs by offering resources, building program capacity, and encouraging consistent practices. National Consortium of Telehealth Resource Centers

Annotation: The National Consortium of Telehealth Resource Centers (NCTRC) is an affiliation of the 14 Telehealth Resource Centers funded individually through cooperative agreements from the Health Resources & Services Administration, Office for the Advancement of Telehealth. The goal of the NCTRC is to increase the consistency, efficiency, and impact of federally funded telehealth technical assistance services. National Dental Practice-Based Research Network (NDPBRN)

National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)

Annotation: The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is the federal agency responsible for conducting research and making recommendations for the prevention of work-related injury and illness. NIOSH responds to inquiries from consumers for referrals and reference information and provides technical assistance for its research programs. Publications include an electronic newsletter, a science blog, and a variety of downloadable brochures and other documents (many materials are available in Spanish). National Prevention Information Network (NPIN)

Annotation: The National Prevention Information Network (NPIN) is the U.S. reference and referral service for information on HIV/AIDS, viral hepatitis, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and tuberculosis (TB). NPIN is a clearinghouse and collaborative community that collects and disseminates data and materials and enables prevention professionals on the international, national, state, and local levels to connect and share. Services are designed to facilitate program collaboration in sharing information, resources, published materials, research, and trends among the four diseases. Services include a social community, a database of providers, education materials, funding opportunities, research on health communication campaigns, campaign planning resources, training resources, and digital media tools.

National Youth Sports Safety Foundation (NYSSF)

Annotation: The National Youth Sports Safety Foundation, formerly the National Youth Sports Foundation for the Prevention of Athletic Injuries, is a nonprofit educational organization established in1989 dedicated to reducing the number and severity of injuries youth sustain in sports and fitness activities through the education o f health professionals, program administrators, coaches, parents and athletes. At the heart of the Foundation's mission is a commitment to promote the healthy development of youth, and to keep them physically active and in sports for life. The foundation serves as an educational resource and its publications include a quarterly newsletter , the Yearbook of Youth Sports Safety, injury fact sheets, resource sheets and guidelines. The Foundation is the lead organization for National Youth Sports Safety Month, a national health event to promote safety in sports activities. A publications list is available.

North American Menopause Society (NAMS)

Annotation: The North American Menopause Society (NAMS) is a nonprofit organization that promotes the health and quality of life of women through an understanding of menopause. NAMS publishes materials for professionals and consumers. The Society also develops curriculum materials, surveys and questionnaires, position statements, and recommended reading lists, and publishes book reviews of publications about menopause. Some materials are available in Spanish. Consumers can sign up online to receive a free monthly newsletter.
