International Child Resource Institute (ICRI)

Annotation: The mission of International Child Resource Institute (ICRI) is to improve the lives of children and families throughout the world, enabling them to survive and succeed. ICRI provides services for families and children locally and around the world through technical assistance and consultation to a wide variety of national and international organizations, businesses, governments, non-profits and others interested in such children's issues as child care, child abuse prevention, child survival, maternal and child health, placement alternatives for abandoned and traumatized children and the promotion of children's rights.

International Step by Step Association

Annotation: The International Step by Step Association (ISSA) is a non-governmental membership organization established in the Netherlands in 1999 to foster democratic principles and promote parent and community involvement in early childhood education. Annotation: The Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care (EEC) provides the foundation that supports all children in their development as lifelong learners and contributing members of the community, and supports families in their essential work as parents and caregivers.The EEC oversees early education and care and after-school services for families. Services include information and resources, early childhood special education, universal pre-kindergarten, financial assistance, licensing and monitoring, professional development and program quality advancement, and family support programs.

National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC)

Annotation: The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) is a natinal membership organization of early childhood professionals and others dedicated to improving the quality of services for young children and their families. The Association hosts an annual conference, maintains searchable databases,provides policy-related information and legislative analyses, and administers the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs (a voluntary national accreditation system) and the National Institute for Early Childhood Professional Development. Publications include brochures, books, videotapes, posters, a catalog, a newsletter and the bimonthly journal Young Children. Some materials are available in Spanish.

National Association of Early Childhood Specialists in State Departments of Education (NAECS/SDE)

Annotation: The National Association of Early Childhood Specialists in State Departments of Education (NAECS/SDE), is a national organization for the state education agency staff members with major responsibility in the field of early childhood education. The association promotes quality services to young children and their families through improvement of instruction, curriculum, and administration of programs. Specific purposes of the organization include: strengthening communications and coordination among states; influencing and supporting policies and legislation that affect the education, health, and welfare of children and their families; offering assistance and leadership in researching analyzing, and recommending standards for quality early childhood and teacher preparation programs; and promoting communication and coordination between state departments of education, and other agencies and professional organizations serving young children.

National Association of Early Childhood Teacher Educators, Dept. of Teaching & Learning (NAECTE)

Annotation: The National Association of Early Childhood Teacher Educators (NAECTE) promotes the professional growth of early childhood teacher educators and advocates for improvements in early childhood teacher education. NEACTE responds to consumer inquiries, publishes a journal (Journal of Early Childhood Teacher Education), and sponsors conferences.

National Center for Children in Poverty (NCCP)

Annotation: The National Center for Children in Poverty (NCCP) is a non-profit, non-partisan policy research organization whose mission is to identify and promote strategies to reduce child poverty and improve the well-being of low-income children and their families. NCCP alerts the public to demographic statistics about child poverty and to the scientific research on the impact of poverty; designs and conducts studies to identify programs, policies, and practices that work best; disseminates information about economic security, early care and learning, and family stability; brings together public and private groups; and challenges policymakers and opinion leaders to change the adverse consequences of poverty on young children. NCCP maintains a web site of information and resources and publishes newsletters, reports, issue briefs, and fact sheets, and maintains an e-newsletter. In partnership with the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research at the Institute for Social Research, the University of Michigan; and the U.S. Child Care Bureau, it provides the Web resource Child Care and Early Education Research Connections.

National Center on Early Childhood Development, Teaching, and Learning (ECDTL)

Annotation: The National Center on Early Childhood Development, Teaching, and Learning (ECDTL) supports meaningful learning for children and the early educators who support them. The center is funded and guided by the U.S. Office of Head Start and the U.S. Office of Child Care to promote excellence across all ECE programs by offering resources, building program capacity, and encouraging consistent practices. It is one of four national centers funded by the U.S. Office of Head Start.

National Center on Early Childhood Health and Wellness (NCECHW)

Annotation: The National Center on Health (NCECHW) provides resources, training, and technical assistance to the child care and Head Start communities on health-related topics (e.g., health literacy, physical health, mental health, nutrition, oral health, and injury and tobacco prevention). NCECHW is funded by the Administration for Children and Families’ Office of Head Start and Office of Child Care in partnership with the Health Resource and Services Administration’s Maternal and Child Health Bureau.

National Center on Parent, Family, and Community Engagement (NCPFCE)

Annotation: The National Center on Parent, Family, and Community Engagement identifies, develops, and disseminates evidence-based best practices associated with the development of young children and the strengthening of families and communities. The Center creates culturally and linguistically relevant training and tools for implementing comprehensive, systemic, and integrated approaches to parent, family, and community engagement in Head Start and Early Head Start. National Center on Program Management and Fiscal Operations

Annotation: The National Center on Program Management and Fiscal Operations contributes to positive outcomes for young children and their families by strengthening the management and practices of Head Start and Early Head Start programs. The Center focuses on the elements of managing successful agencies and will offer information, training, and resources. Center staff members are committed to identifying best practices, sharing current and emerging research, and serving as a vehicle for communication on management and finance topics for the Head Start community. National Child Care Association (NCCA)

Annotation: The National Child Care Association (NCCA), is a national membership organization of licensed private child care centers, child development staff, and state affiliated associations. It focuses on the education, training, experience, and effectiveness of child care professionals in providing comprehensive services to children and their families. The association offers an education program which awards qualified professionals with national credentials, Certified Child care Professional (CCP) Early Childhood Education Specialist and the National Administrators Credential (NAC). Services to consumers include referrals, publications, and reference information. Publications include National Focus, a quarterly newsletter featuring information on federal legislation, national and state initiatives, trends, and successful ideas. The organization also sponsors conferences.

National Early Childhood Program Accreditation (NECPA)

Annotation: The National Early Childhood Program Accreditation (NECPA) recognizes licensed early care and education programs that meet its developmental, health, and safety standards. The accreditation process includes a self assessment, an on-site visit, surveys of parents and staff, and study and consideration by the National Accreditation Council and the NECPA Commission. The accreditation is valid for three years with the submission of approved annual reports. Standards relate to the program's administration, working environment, developmental program, health and safety provisions for children and staff, parent and community relations, and faculty. Services to consumers include referrals.

National Head Start Association (NHSA)

Annotation: The National Head Start Association (NHSA) is a private, nonprofit membership organization of parents, staff members, directors, and representatives from each of the 12 federal regions. The association represents 750,00 children, 139,000 staff members, and more than 2,050 Head Start programs. Services to consumers include referrals, publications, and reference information. NHSA publishes a catalog, newsletter, and journal and sponsors conferences and training seminars. The Association also advocates policies. Some materials are available in Spanish.

National Institute for Early Education Research (NIEER)

Annotation: The National Institute for Early Education Research (NIEER) supports early childhood education by providing objective, nonpartisan information based on research. The goal of NIEER is to produce and communicate the knowledge base required to ensure that every American child can receive a good education at ages three and four. The Institute works with state and national policy makers and other organizations, and offers research-based advice and technical assistance. NIEER is located at Rutgers University's Graduate School of Education, and was merged with Rutgers’ Center for Early Education Research in 2002. The website includes policy briefs, fact sheets, reports, presentations, news, and additional resources.

Office of Head Start (OHS)

Annotation: The Office of Head Start (OHS) advises the Assistant Secretary for Children and Families on issues regarding the Head Start program (including Early Head Start). The Office develops legislative and budgetary proposals; identifies areas for research, demonstration, and developmental activities; presents operational planning objectives and initiatives relating to Head Start; and oversees the progress of approved activities. OHS provides leadership and coordination for the activities of the Head Start program in the ACF Central Office including the Head Start Regional Program Units. The Office represents Head Start in inter-agency activities with other Federal and non-Federal organizations. Early Head Start promotes healthy prenatal outcomes, enhances the development of infants and toddlers, and promotes healthy family functioning.

Parents Action for Children

Annotation: Parent Action for Children (PACt) is a nonprofit organization that works to raise awareness about the importance of early childhood development and school readiness. PAC develops, produces, and distributes resources for parents, early childhood professionals, child advocates, health care providers, policymakers and the media. The organization promotes public policies that help ensure our children have the physical wellbeing and the social, emotional and cognitive abilities they need to enter school ready to succeed.

Smart Start

Annotation: Smart Start is a childhood initiative in the state of North Carolina designed to help ensure that young children enter school healthy and ready to succeed. This public-private initiative provides early education funding to all of the state's 100 counties through local nonprofit organizations. Smart Start works to improve the quality of child care, make child care more affordable and accessible, and provide access to health services and other family support, Smart Start's National Technical Assistance Center provides technical assistance to communities and states and offers a variety of publications, in both English and Spanish, describing start-up efforts, lessons learned, effective practices, and quality improvement.

State Early Childhood Policy Technical Assistance Network (SECPTAN)

Annotation: The State Early Childhood Policy Technical Assistance Network (SECPTAN) is a network of early childhood researchers, consultants, policymakers, and practitioners that provide evidence-based technical assistance to state decision makers on policy issues. The network provides a variety of reports, resource briefs, and other documents on early childhood initiatives and school readiness (these can be downloaded in pdf format from the Web site) SECPTAN also hosts workshops and provides presentations which can be downloaded for information and/or replication.
