Bright Futures Pediatric Implementation Project

Annotation: The Bright Futures Pediatric Implementation Project examines barriers to health professionals' (e.g., pediatricians, nurses, family physicians, dentists, nurse practitioners) implementation of Bright Futures: Guidelines for Health Supervision of Infants, Children, and Adolescents and develops new strategies to improve implementation of the guidelines. The project is funded by the Maternal and Child Health Bureau.

Bright Futures™ at AAP

Annotation: The Bright Futures Education Center focuses on improving awareness of the importance of preventive services among health care professionals, public/private partners, communities, and families; revising Bright Futures: Guidelines for Health Supervision of Infants, Children, and Adolescents; and developing materials to assist in implementation of the guidelines. Building Bridges Initiative (BBI)

Annotation: The Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) identifies and promotes practice and policy initiatives that will create strong and closely coordinated partnerships and collaborations between families, youth, community- and residentially-based treatment and service providers, advocates and policymakers to ensure that comprehensive services and supports are family-driven, youth-guided, strength-based, culturally and linguistically competent, individualized, evidence- and practice-informed, and consistent with the research on sustained positive outcomes.

Catalyst Center, the National Center for Health Insurance and Financing for Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs

Annotation: The Catalyst Center at the Boston University School of Public Health is dedicated to improving coverage and financing of care for children and youth with special health care needs. The center creates publications and products, answers technical assistance questions, researches innovative state-based financing strategies, guides stakeholders to outside resources, and connects those interested in working together to address complex health care financing issues. The center is funded by the Maternal and Child Health Bureau.

Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth (CAMY)

Annotation: The Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth (CAMY) at Georgetown University monitors the marketing practices of the alcohol industry to focus attention and action on industry practices that jeopardize the health and safety of America's youth. The center produces research reports, fact sheets, and media summaries, and calls on concerned adults to take action against the inappropriate promotion of alcohol to vulnerable populations.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

Annotation: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is the primary Federal agency responsible for conducting and supporting public health activities in the United States, including the prevention and control of infectious and chronic disease. The primary goals of the agency are to reduce health risks during every stage of life; spearhead efforts to improve global health; ensure that the places people live, work, and play have safe, healthy environments; and prepare for emerging health threats from mental health to environmental health. The Public Inquiries Office responds to inquiries in the areas of preventive medicine, immunization, disease control, and health education. The Web site covers a wide range of health & safety topics, including diseases & conditions, emergency preparedness, environmental health, life stages & populations, healthy living, injury and violence; travelers' health, and workplace health and safety. Also included are links to data and statistics, online access to CDC's journals and other publications; and tools & resources such as an image library, podcasts, and a Body Mass Index (BMI) calculator. A Spanish-language version of the Web site is available, and some materials are available in Spanish, French, Asian languages and other languages. CDC also sponsors conferences, training seminars and workshops.

Child Health USA

Children's Digestive Health and Nutrition Foundation (CDHNF)

Annotation: The Children's Digestive Health and Nutrition Foundation (CDHNF) funds and promotes research and educational programs that will advance the creation, application, and dissemination of knowledge of gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, pancreatic and nutritional disorders in children. CDHNFo identify, encourage, support, and coordinate scientific research and professional study of these pediatric disorders. CDHNF also aims to strengthen the role of pediatric gastrointestinal and nutritional scientists as leaders in research and education in these medical and health care fields, evaluate and improve the quality and availability of medical care for children with digestive disorders, and supports the research and educational programs of the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition.

Children's Hopes and Dreams Foundation

Annotation: The Children's Hopes and Dreams Foundation is a nonprofit foundation that serves children with chronic and life threatening illnesses. The foundation fulfills last dreams, matches special pen-pal friends, and sends Kids Kare packages. Hospitals, hospices, clinics, serious illness camps, Ronald McDonald Houses and Dream/Wish Groups in over 22 countries participate in the program. Common Sense About Kids and Guns

Annotation: Common Sense About Kids and Guns is a nonprofit group of owners and non-owners of guns committed to protecting America's children from gun deaths and injuries. The organization disseminates information about common sense solutions for reducing gun-related injuries and deaths to children and adolescents and works to inspire Americans to take personal and community responsibility to keep children safe from guns. The organization provides a public forum and serves as a national clearinghouse. State information, safety tips, resources, a bulletin board, and news items are posted on the Common Sense Web site.

Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO)

Annotation: The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) is a nonprofit organization of the public officials who head the departments of elementary and secondary education in states, the District of Columbia, the Department of Defense Education Activity, and five extra-state jurisdictions including Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Activities of the Council's School Health Project include providing information about HIV education, school-based pregnancy prevention, successful collaboration, and other coordinated school health programs. Publications include newsletters and reports (many can be downloaded free of charge). The Directory of Coordinated School Health Program Staff (jointly published by CCSSO, the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials, and and the Society of State Directors of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation) is a state-by-state listing of staff in state education and health agencies whose responsibilities are related to health education, physical education, counseling and psychological services, parent/community involvement, and other aspects of school health. Dougy Center - National Center for Grieving Children and Families

Annotation: The Dougy Center provides support in a safe place where children, teens, young adults, and their families grieving a death can share their experiences. Educational Equity Concepts (EEC)

Annotation: Educational Equity Concepts, formerly the National Clearinghouse on Women and Girls with Disabilities, is a national not-for-profit organization that promotes bias-free learning through programs and materials. Founded in 1982, their mission is to decrease discrimination based on gender, race/ethnicity, disability, and level of family income. The organization provides materials and programs for early childhood and elementary classrooms and after-school settings, offers workshops and training, and publishes resources for women and girls with disabilities.

Educators for Social Responsibility (ESR)

Annotation: Educators for Social Responsibility (ESR), a national nonprofit organization founded in 1982, helps educators create safe, caring, respectful, and productive learning environments and also helps educators work with young people to develop the social skills, emotional competencies, and qualities of character they need to succeed in school and become contributing members of their communities. ESR also helps educators respond to local, national, and international crises related to interpersonal and systemic violence, intolerance, and global conflicts and war. Materials address all age groups from early childhood through grade 12.

ETR Associates (ETR)

Annotation: ETR Associates is a private, nonprofit health education organization and publisher of health education materials. It develops and distributes maternal and child health pamphlets, booklets, videos, and charts, including more than 46 pamphlets on pregnancy and childbirth. Other topics include family life education, abstinence, birth control, reproductive health, sexual responsibility, self-esteem, drug use, and sexually transmitted disease. Publications include two baby care booklets in both English and Spanish; the Have a Healthy Baby bilingual pamphlet series,which is an innovative bilingual approach to prenatal education, with English on one side and Spanish on the reverse; a pamphlet on fetal alcohol syndrome; a series of Kid Care pamphlets for parents and caregivers of children ages 2 to 5; and illustrated childbirth charts and displays. A publication catalog is available.

Family Voices, IMPACT

Annotation: IMPACT, a project of national Family Voices, promotes a holistic approach to health and wellness for all families and children including those with special healthcare needs and disabilities. IMPACT elevates and expands the capacity of family organizations – those that serve all children as well as those that serve children with special needs and disabilities – to educate and inform families about lifestyle strategies and choices that positively impact the long-term good health of children. IMPACT promotes health and wellness by developing materials and tools and sharing other resources that help families learn skills to build healthy relationships, healthy families, and healthy communities.
