Indiana University, Center for Adolescent and Family Studies

Annotation: The Center for Adolescent and Family Studies (formlerly the Center for Adolescent Studies) at Indiana University works to further the understanding of the psychological, biological and social features of normal adolescence. The center functions as a resource center for educators, health practitioners, parents and researchers by providing electronic guides to Web resources on health related topics such as violence prevention, depression, eating disorders, alcohol and drug abuse, sexuality, and AIDS. It also provides links to research conducted by the Indiana University School of Education on adolescent issues, resources for teachers focusing on the social and emotional growth of students, and information on upcoming conferences. Links to Youth Service America, a youth volunteer service project, and the Starbright Foundation, which addresses the psychosocial issues surrounding youth with chronic illnesses, are also provided.

Institute on Violence, Abuse and Trauma (IVAT )

Annotation: The Institute on Violence, Abuse and Trauma (IVAT) works to improve the quality of life and promote violence-free living for individuals on a local, national, and international level by conducting research, sharing and disseminating information, improving networking among professionals, and assisting with program evaluation, consultation, and training. Formed when the Family Violence and Sexual Assault Institute merged with the Alliant International University,the institute promotes collaboration across disciplines and and encorporates many centers that focus on family violence, sexual assault, youth and school violence, workplace volence, violence prevention, and traumatic stress. IVAT publishes a bulletin, journals, and resource lists; and hosts an international conference.

Michigan Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence (MCADSV)

Naitonal Center for Bullying Prevention

Annotation: The National Center for Bullying Prevention provides information on the prevention of bullying for elementary, middle and high school students, their parents, and their teachers. Its Web site includes contests for students, a lesson plan to be used in elementary schools which includes animated cartoons, games and other material; handouts; materials that can be purchased, including a curriculum for parents of children with disabilities; and information on the Bullying Prevention Awareness Week. Some of the information is available in Spanish and Somali.

National Center for Children Exposed to Violence (NCCEV)

Annotation: The National Center for Children Exposed to Violence (NCCEV), founded in 1999, works to increase public and professional awareness of the effects of violence on children and to build the capacity of individuals and communities to reduce the impact of violence. NCCEV offers a Web based resource center which provides access to an on-line library, statistics, publications, and presentations. Training, technical assistance, and consultation are also provided to community programs such as Safe Start, a federally funded initiative which addresses the needs of children ages 0-6 who have been exposed to violence and the Child Development-Community Policing Program (CD-CP), a community collaboration involving law enforcement and mental health agencies.

National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC)

Annotation: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) began studying motor vehicle, home, and recreational injuries in the early 1970s and violence prevention in 1983. From these early activities grew a national program to reduce injury, disability, death, and costs associated with injuries outside the workplace. in June 1992, CDC established the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC). As the lead federal agency for injury prevention, NCIPC works closely with other federal agencies; national, state, and local organizations; state and local health departments; and research institutions. Services to consumers include referrals, publications, and reference information. NCIPC publishes a newsletter, supports research, and sponsors conferences and training seminars.

National Center for Mental Health Promotion and Youth Violence Prevention

Annotation: The National Center for Mental Health Promotion and Youth Violence Prevention is a training and technical assistance center for grantees of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services working to promote mental health and prevent youth violence among children, their families, and other adults. Through training, technical assistance, distance learning, and on-site consultation, the center helps grantees develop needs assessments and implement strategic plans, use evidence-based interventions, select and use evaluation tools, build coalitions that include families, youth, and other stakeholders, and sustain projects beyond their initial federal funding. The center provides on-site technical assistance and consultation, training workshops and tutorials, online courses, and information on the latest research, events, and funding opportunities. The center also conducts national conferences and regional meetings to facilitate peer interaction and learning.

National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC)

Annotation: The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) provides professionals and the public with information and publications concerning missing children, child molestation, child pornography, and child prostitution. The center sponsors a hotline to assist the public in reporting missing and exploited children and in providing information leading to the location of these children. The center also maintains national statistics and information on the incidence of abductions; conducts a training and technical assistance programs; and provides news bulletins, fact sheets, and other resources for parents and guardians, childcare providers, law enforcement officers, and the media. Materials are available in Spanish, Asian languages, and other languages.

National Center for School Crisis and Bereavement

Annotation: The National Center for School Crisis and Bereavement was created to promote an appreciation of the role schools can serve to support students, staff ,and families at times of crisis and loss; enhance the training of individuals in school-related professional education programs in the areas of crisis and loss; link efforts to provide trauma-related and bereavement support services within school settings; and collaborate with professional organizations, governmental and non-governmental agencies and community groups to further help students, staff and families at times of crisis and loss. The center provides information, training materials, consultation and technical assistance for school systems, professional training programs, professional organizations, governmental and non-governmental agencies, communities, children's groups and projects in the areas of crisis and loss. Web content can be viewed in both English and Spanish. The center was established in December 2005 with funding from the September 11th Children's Fund and the National Philanthropic Trust.

National Clearinghouse on Family Violence (NCVF)

Annotation: The National Clearinghouse on Family Violence (NCFV) is Canada's resource centre for information on violence within relationships of kinship, intimacy, dependency or trust. NCFV resources and services, including publications, videos, a website, toll-free line, referral service, and library reference collection, are available free of charge in both English and French. The NCFV offers more than 140 publications, including overview papers, reports, discussion papers, and handbooks on family violence issues. A bi-annual newsletter highlighting emerging issues, upcoming events, and the most recent NCFV resources and services is also available, in addition to a series of national directories which list various programs and services that are offered to both victims and perpetrators of family violence in communities across the country.

National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges (NCJFCJ)

Annotation: The National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges (NCJFCJ) represents America's judges who exercise jurisdiction over delinquency, abuse, and neglect, divorce, custody, support, domestic violence and similar types of cases throughout the country. The National Council, a 501 (c) (3) coroporation, conducts judicial education and training programs at the Louis W. McHardy National College of Juvenile and Family Justice, located on the Reno campus of the University of Nevada as well as at numerous sites throughout the country. Current focus issues of the National Council include juvenile and family law, serious and violent juvenile crime, child abuse and neglect, youthful sex offenders, family violence, substance abuse issues and a host of other subjects. Their services to consumers include referrals, publications, and reference information. NCJFCJ publishes a journal, newsletter, digest, and catalog. The association also sponsors conferences, workshops, and training seminars.

National Council on Child Abuse and Family Violence (NCCAFV)

Annotation: The National Council on Child Abuse and Family Violence (NCCAFV) is a national nonprofit organization that promotes private sector initiatives and private/public sector collaboration in preventing child abuse, spouse/partner abuse (domestic violence), and elder abuse. NCCAFV provides the Secretariat for the International Network on Family Violence (INFV), for the biennial World Congress on Family Violence (WCFV), and for Child Welfare Fund International (CWFI). NCCAFV seeks to elevate public awareness of intergenerational family violence; to serve as a catalyst in building national and international networks for collaborative action; to provide opportunities for development and enrichment to professionals in private and public agencies; to develop model programs in prevention and treatment of intergenerational family violence; to support research and evaluation efforts that expand knowledge in the field and translate it into better practice and programs for victims; and to provide statistical, program and research data on intergenerational family violence. Services to consumers include referrals, reference information, and publications that are available free of charge on NCCAFV's Web site.

National Council on Family Relations (NCFR)

Annotation: The National Council on Family Relations (NCFR) is a nonprofit organization of professionals in education, social work, counseling, psychology, sociology, psychotherapy, home economics, anthropology, and health. It provides information on cross-cultural families, family violence, adolescent issues, working families, and other related concerns, and it sponsors a national program to certify family life educators. Services to consumers include publications and reference information. The organization's publications include Family Relations, Journal of Marriage and Family, the NCFR Report, and Zippy News (weekly updates sent to e-mail subsribers). A publications and products catalog is available. NCFR also sponsors conferences and training seminars.

National Domestic Violence Fatality Review Initiative

Annotation: The National Domestic Violence Fatality Review Initiative (NDVFRI) serves as a resource center and clearinghouse dedicated to domestic violence fatality review. NDVFI provides information, support, and technical assistance in the form of customized information packets, onsite training, conferences, and teleconferences. The center publishes a quarterly newsletter and an emerging practices manual, and maintains a database with information on existing fatality review teams. State information, international reports, and review protocol and tools are among the resources posted on the Web site. NDVFRI is an initiative funded through a grant awarded by the Office on Violence Against Women, U .S. Department of Justice.

National Health Collaborative on Violence and Abuse (NHCVA)

Annotation: The National Health Collaborative on Violence and Abuse (NHCVA) brings health organizations and societies together to advance health policy related to violence and abuse through judicial, budgetary, or regulatory processes at the state and federal level. NHCVA seeks to improve health professionals' and health systems' capacities to prevent and to address the harms of violence and abuse.

National Health Resource Center on Domestic Violence

Annotation: The National Health Resource Center on Domestic Violence focuses on strengthening health care response to domestic violence. The Center provides resources, training materials, and technical assistance to health care professionals, domestic violence experts, survivors, and policy makers at all levels. The center provides an online toolkit for health care providers and DV advocates to prepare a clinical practice to address domestic and sexual violence, including screening instruments, sample scripts for providers, patient and provider educational resources. The Center also hosts national conferences and produces an e-bulletin, an online materials index, and a webinar series. Materials are available in Spanish, Asian, and other languages.

National Latino Alliance for the Elimination of Domestic Violence

Annotation: The National Latino Alliance for the Elimination of Domestic Violence (Alianza) is part of a national effort to address the domestic violence needs and concerns of Latino communities and other underserved population. The alliance' work to promote understanding, initiate and sustain dialogue, and generate solutions that move toward the elimination of domestic violence affecting underserved populations. Services include training and technical assistance, research, community education and development, and policy development. Alianza publications include brochures, fact sheets, informational booklets, manuals, positions papers, a national directory, and an annotated bibliography of literature on the topic of domestic violence in Latino/Latina communities.

National Online Resource Center on Violence Against Women (VAWnet)

Annotation: The National Online Resource Center on Violence Against Women (VAWnet) uses electronic communication technology to enhance efforts to prevent violence against women and intervene more effectively when it occurs. VAWnet supports local, state, and national prevention and intervention strategies that enhance safety and well-being and address self-identified needs and concerns of victims and survivors. VAWnet is a project of the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence (NRC)/Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence (PCADV).

National School Safety Center (NSSC)

Annotation: The National School Safety Center (NSSC) serves as an advocate for safe, secure and peaceful schools worldwide and as a catalyst for the prevention of school crime and violence. Emphasis is placed on the prevention of school crime and violence, and on programs to improve student attendance, achievement, and school climate. The center provides consultation and technical assistance, offers a school safety assessment program, sponsors conferences, workshops, and training seminars, and produces videotapes and publications (including news updates and resource papers).

National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC)

Annotation: The National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC) is a comprehensive collection and distribution center for information, research, and emerging policy on sexual violence intervention and prevention. It provides online library and technical assistance and also coordinates National Sexual Assault Awareness Month initiatives. NSVRC is a project of the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape (PCAR) , which advocates for services for all sexual assault victims and works to increase public understanding of sexual violence. Through the coalition, the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare funds 52 centers that provide services for adult and child victim/survivors and their families in all Pennsylvania counties. These services include 24-hour hotlines, crisis counseling, education programs for schools and communities, systems advocacy, information and referral, and hospital, police, and court accompaniment. PCAR publishes a catalog and a newsletter and sponsors training seminars and workshops. Some materials are available in Spanish.
