Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety

Annotation: Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety is a broad-based alliance of consumer, safety, and law enforcement groups, insurance companies, and insurance agent organizations. These groups work together to promote adoption of effective highway safety legislation, standards, policies, and programs at national and state levels to reduce deaths, injuries, and economic costs associated with motor vehicle crashes. Services to consumers include limited referrals. Their informational brochure is available free by written request.

Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA)

Annotation: The Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), formerly the National Association of Governors' Highway Safety Representatives, is a nonprofit association formed in 1967 to represent state highway safety agencies. The association influences existing federal highway safety policies, educates Congress about the importance of highway safety, and provides technical assistance to member states. Its committees develop policies on issues such as occupant protection, impaired driving, data collection, and road safety. Services to consumers include referrals and a limited number of publications. The association also publishes a newsletter, and sponsors an annual meeting and training seminars.

National Safety Council (NSC)

Annotation: Founded in 1913, the National Safety Council (NSC) is a federally chartered nonprofit organization whose mission is to protect life and promote health. NSC sponsors many conferences which address safety and health issues in the workplace, at home, on the road, in schools, and through both work and leisure activities. The National Safety Council works with public and private sectors, providing training programs that focus on first aid and occupational health and safety, outreach and educational activities, public service efforts and consulting, and through educational materials including Safety and Health and Family Safety & Health magazines and The Journal of Safety Research. NSC maintains a library and provides materials for educators, professionals, children, and the general public covering topics such as air quality, climate change, hazardous chemicals, radioactive waste, and children's environmental health.

Operation Lifesaver (OLI)

Annotation: Operation Lifesaver is a non-profit, international, public education program, begun in 1972, to reduce the number of crashes, deaths, and injuries at highway-rail grade crossings and on railroad rights-of-way. Operation Lifesaver coordinators are located in every state and the District of Columbia. There also are Operation Lifesaver programs in Canada, Mexico, England, Argentina and Estonia. Operation Lifesaver's trained and certified volunteer speakers are available to provide free safety presentations for people of all professions and age groups to help them make safe decisions around tracks and trains. Services to consumers include referrals to safety speakers, safety publications, and safety speaker training. Materials are available in Spanish and French. Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center (PBC)

Annotation: The Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center (PBIC)'s mission is to improve the quality of life in communities through the increase of safe walking and bicycling as a viable means of transportation and physical activity. Through Web sites, information and training is offered to diverse audiences about health and safety, engineering, advocacy, education, enforcement, access, and mobility as it relates to pedestrians and bicyclists. The PBIC is funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Prevention Institute

Annotation: The Prevention Institute was founded in 1997 to address complex health and social issues moving beyond approaches that target individuals, one person at a time, to create systematic, comprehensive strategies that change the conditions that impact community health. The organization focuses on fields such as injury and violence prevention, traffic safety, health disparities, nutrition and physical activity, and youth development.

ThinkFirst National Injury Prevention Foundation (ThinkFirst)

Annotation: ThinkFirst National Injury Prevention Foundation works to prevent brain, spinal cord, and other traumatic injuries through education, research, and advocacy. The foundation offers theory-based, evidence-based injury prevention programs for children, adolescents, and young adults; presentations through a chapter network; injury prevention facts; educational materials and resources; training for physicians and other health professionals; and speaker, volunteer, and support opportunities.

University of North Carolina, Highway Safety Research Center (HSRC)

Annotation: The University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center (HSRC) works to reduce societal losses due to transportation crash injuries and deaths. Research focuses on four areas of surface transportation safety: the driver/occupant, the pedestrian/bicyclist, the vehicle, and the roadway. The center is staffed by professionals in the fields of education, engineering, epidemiology, journalism, medicine, psychology, public health, sociology, statistics, and library science. The center provides referrals and reference information. Publications include fact sheets, research publications, and a newsletter (Highway Safety Directions). An electronic bibliography of HSRC research publications, with some full-text links, is available on the Web site. Some materials are available in Spanish.
