British Columbia Centre of Excellence for Women's Health

Annotation: The Centre works to improve the health of women through innovative research and the development of women-centered programs, practice, and policies. The Centre partners with Canadian local community agencies, provincial initiatives, national organizations, and international agencies to conduct research and/or to exchange knowledge among community members, academic researchers, policy makers, and health care professionals. Priority topic areas are: women, gender, tobacco and lung health; women, gender, addictions and mental health; women and health services; women, gender and chronic disease; health promotion and women; and physical activity.

Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids

Annotation: The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, an initiative sponsored through partnerships with health, education, medical, civic, corporate, youth, and religious organizations, strives to reduce tobacco addiction and exposure to second hand smoke among children. The campaign's goals are to change public policy regarding tobacco at the federal, state, and local government level; to counter tobacco industry marketing to youth; and to increase the number of organizations and individuals supporting efforts to fight tobacco use. Information is provided on federal, state, and global initiatives aimed at reducing tobacco use. State statistics on tobacco usage and tobacco related deaths, samples of tobacco advertisements and statistics on industry advertising costs, and news reports on tobacco-related studies and legislation are available through the organization's Web site. Fact sheets, special reports, and information on tobacco political action committee contributions are also provided through the campaign's research center.

National Partnership to Help Pregnant Smokers Quit

Annotation: The National Partnership to Help Pregnant Smokers Quit is a coalition of diverse organizations that have joined forces to increase the number of pregnant smokers who quit smoking. The partnership offers a broad range of resources for health care professionals, advocates, and consumers, including research findings, fact sheets, and cessation tips and techniques. Media campaigns, community outreach, and increased funding opportunities are among the strategic elements outlined in the coalition's Action Plan.

Network for LGBT Health Equity

Annotation: The Network for LGBT Health Equity is a community-driven network of advocates and professionals looking to enhance LGBT health by eliminating tobacco use, and other health disparities within communities. They maintain a virtual forum of LGBT tobacco and wellness professionals, encouraging them to share lessons and jointly monitor gaps in the arena. They gather and maintain a promising practice clearinghouse through their website. They directly train state health departments or other policymakers in LGBT cultural competency and forge bridges between them and local LGBT health specialists. They actively monitor national and state health policymakers and urge community action when there is an opportunity to enhance LGBT wellness. It is one of six tobacco disparity networks funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Oral Health America, National Spit Tobacco Education Program (NSTEP)

Annotation: Oral Health America's National Spit Tobacco Education Program (NSTEP) was founded in 1994 as an effort to educate the baseball family and the American public about the dangers of smokeless or spit tobacco, and break the long-standing link between smokeless tobacco and baseball. NSTEP's mission is to prevent people, especially young people, from starting to use spit tobacco, and to help all users quit.

Prevention of Gestational and Neonatal Exposure to Tobacco Smoke (PREGNETS)

Annotation: The Prevention of Gestational and Neonatal Exposure to Tobacco Smoke network seeks to improve the health of moms and their babies by offering information, resources and support to pregnant and postpartum women and their health care providers in quitting smoking. A toolkit is provided for healthcare professional to encourage smoking reduction and cessation.

Social Climate of Tobacco Control

Annotation: The Social Climate of Tobacco Control researches the increased health risks to children of exposure to secondhand smoke including lung cancer, heart disease, and respiratory illness. Support for the National Social Climate Survey of Tobacco Control was provided by the AAP Julius B. Richmond Center for Excellence for Children, Mississippi State University's Social Science Research Center, and the American Legacy Foundation.

Truth Initiative

Annotation: Truth Initiative (formerly American Legacy Foundation) is a non-profit public health organization dedicated to speaking, seeking, and spreading the truth about tobacco through education, tobacco-control research, policy studies, and community activism and engagement. The initiative shares research and the work of tobacco control colleagues with summaries of peer review studies and academic analyses. Topics include tobacco products, industry and influence, who smokes, policy and intervention, and patterns of use.

Wisconsin Clearinghouse For Prevention Resources (WCH)

Annotation: The Wisconsin Clearinghouse For Prevention Resources is an official information and materials resource for the state of Wisconsin that also serves schools, agencies, programs, community groups, and businesses nationwide. Its goal is to strengthen individuals, families, and communities. The Clearinghouse provides a wide range of educational materials and services to prevention specialists, counselors, and other professionals. Topics include alcohol and other drugs, curricula and teacher resources, high-risk youth and high-risk behaviors, resources for programs and professionals, tobacco and smoking, fetal alcohol syndrome, primary prevention and health promotion, mental health, and families and substance abuse prevention. Posters, publications and videotapes are available. Some materials are available in Spanish, plus a few items also available in Chinese, Vietnamese, Cambodian, and Korean. The organization publishes a quarterly newsletter.
