Any Baby Can (ABC)

Annotation: Established in 1982, Any Baby Can (ABC) is a networking effort to link all services for high-risk babies and children with developmental delays in San Antonio and Austin, Texas, and in the surrounding region. The organization also provides support services for families in crisis situations and sponsors A Vision for Children Center advocacy and networking coalition as well as training seminars. Any Baby Can has been nationally recognized for innovative efforts that include the ABC Baby Helpline, Crisis Fund for Infants, and intergenerational Family Friends. Any Baby Can created the Texas Respite Resource Network, Children's Transplant Association of Texas, the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Support Group of San Antonio, and the Tiny Trax program for very low birth weight babies. Publications include a quarterly newsletter, brochures, and a childhood development checklist. Some materials are available in Spanish.

Shades of Blue Project

Annotation: A Houston-based nonprofit organization, the Shades of Blue Project focuses on improving maternal mental health outcomes for black and brown birthing people. Its Maternal and Mental Health Resource Center offers social support services, job placement skills, onsite therapy sessions, support groups, and dedicated services to benefit the community.

Texans Care for Children

Annotation: Started in 1985 as "The CARE Coalition," Texans Care began as a network of child-centered groups, seeking to speak with one voice before the Texas Legislature. Texans Care continues that work, advocating for children based on the input of Texas parents, service providers, community leaders, and others. Activities include research and reports, policy papers and briefs, State of the Children blog, policy summits, children's policy overviews, legislative recaps, and other publications and media outreach.

Texas Association of Retinitis Pigmentosa (TARP)

Annotation: The Texas Association of Retinitis Pigmentosa (TARP) provides information sharing, advocacy, referral, and emotional support services for people with retinitis pigmentosa, Usher syndrome, and other progressive visual and hearing conditions. The association provides referrals and reference information to consumers. Publications include four books on RP and Usher Syndrome II by author Dorothy Stiefel. A new publication (disk/book), Dealing with the Threat of Loss, is also available.

Texas Department of State Health Services, Medical and Research Library (DSHS MRL)

Annotation: The Medical and Research Library of the Texas Department of State Health Services exists primarily to serve medical practitioners and medical researchers working for or through the Texas Department of Health. Significant emphasis is placed on services to department employees pursuing job-related needs and interests and to other libraries that call upon the resources of library staff and collections to assist them in meeting their customer needs. The library also addresses the general reference and information needs of department employees and assists students and members of the public in Texas who require health-related information, including students in distance learning courses hosted by the department. The library provides reference services, maintains a collection of materials, locates and retrieves documents, and provides assistance and training in accessing and using information resources and services.

Texas Freedom Network

Annotation: Founded in 1995, the Texas Freedom Network is a nonpartisan, grassroots organization of more than 30,000 religious and community leaders. Based in Austin, the Texas Freedom Network acts as the state’s watchdog, monitoring far-right issues, organizations, money and leaders. The organization has been instrumental in defeating initiatives backed by the religious right in Texas, including private school vouchers, textbook censorship and faith-based deregulation.
