Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)

Annotation: The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) evaluates the safety of products sold to the public, including children's furniture and toys. The commission receives safety-related complaints about these products through its toll-free hotline or its website. Safety-related publications can be downloaded from CPSC's Electronic Reading Room (searchable by subject) or ordered, free-of-charge, in print formats. Many materials are available in Spanish, Chinese, Tagalog, Korean, and Portuguese. The website also provides access to consumer product-related statistics and the National Electronic Surveillance System( a national probability sample of hospitals in the U.S.). A special section of the website is designed for children.

Girl Scouts of the USA

Annotation: Girl Scouts of the USA provides recreational and developmental activities for girls ages 5-17. The Girl Scout program focuses on encouraging girls to develop to their full potential; relate to others with increasing understanding, skill, and respect; develop a meaningful set of values to guide their actions and to provide for sound decision-making; and contribute to the improvement of society. Through the Girl Scout Research Institute, the organization conducts studies, releases information, and provides resources for the well-being and safety of girls. Information is provided in English and Spanish.

National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA)

Annotation: The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) is a nonprofit service organization that works to promote the importance of parks and recreation. Services to consumers include referrals, reference information, and publications. The association sponsors the National Playground Safety Institute, a continuing education program created in 1989 to serve as a national clearinghouse. The institute promotes the importance of play in child development, the rights of children to play in a safe environment, and industry standards and guidelines for public playgrounds. NRPA sponsors conferences and training seminars.

National Sports Center for the Disabled (NSCD)

Annotation: The National Sports Center for the Disabled (NSCD), formerly the Winter Park Handicap Program, was established in 1970 to offer recreational opportunities for individuals with disabilities in the Colorado Rockies. The center's program enables people with over 40 different types of disability to achieve the previously unachievable in skiing, rafting, climbing, and other endeavors. The program offers challenges that create personal growth, enhance family involvement, and allow participants to experience the outdoors on an equal basis regardless of ability level. The center publishes a newsletter,Outrigger , four times a year and produces a program brochure for individuals with disabilities. A catalog is available. In addition, the center offers referrals and reference information to people with disabilities and sponsors conferences, training seminars, and workshops.

National Therapeutic Recreation Society (NTRS)

Annotation: The National Therapeutic Recreation Society (NTRS), a branch of the National Recreation and Park Association, is a membership organization of practitioners, administrators, educators, volunteers, students, and others interested in providing therapeutic recreation services for people with disabilities in clinical facilities and in the community. The Society unites professional and paraprofessional therapeutic recreation personnel and encourages their professional development, advocates for the leisure rights of people with disabilities, encourages and conducts research to improve the quality of therapeutic recreation service, and promotes relationships between therapeutic recreation personnel and professions and agencies concerned with the health and well-being of people with disabilities. Services to consumers include referrals. Publications include Therapeutic Recreation Journal. NTRS sponsors conferences and training seminars.

President's Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition (PCFSN)

Reproductive Toxicology Center (RTC)

Annotation: The Reproductive Toxicology Center (RTC), a nonprofit foundation, collects and disseminates information on the impact of drugs, chemical and physical agents, or other environmental factors on human fertility, pregnancy, and development. Unlimited access to the Reprotox database of fact sheets is available with an annual membership. Members can access Reprotox on the Internet at http://reprotox.org.

U.S. Department of the Interior

Annotation: The U.S. Department of the Interior protects America’s natural resources and heritage, honors U.S. cultures and tribal communities, and supplies the energy to power the nation's future. It focuses on conservation and recreation, land management, climate change, Native American nations, energy resources, and water resources. It sponsors a Youth in the Great Outdoors initiative.

Wisconsin Clearinghouse For Prevention Resources (WCH)

Annotation: The Wisconsin Clearinghouse For Prevention Resources is an official information and materials resource for the state of Wisconsin that also serves schools, agencies, programs, community groups, and businesses nationwide. Its goal is to strengthen individuals, families, and communities. The Clearinghouse provides a wide range of educational materials and services to prevention specialists, counselors, and other professionals. Topics include alcohol and other drugs, curricula and teacher resources, high-risk youth and high-risk behaviors, resources for programs and professionals, tobacco and smoking, fetal alcohol syndrome, primary prevention and health promotion, mental health, and families and substance abuse prevention. Posters, publications and videotapes are available. Some materials are available in Spanish, plus a few items also available in Chinese, Vietnamese, Cambodian, and Korean. The organization publishes a quarterly newsletter.
