American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM)

Annotation: The American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) is the professional organization for nurse-midwives in the United States. Its mission is to support midwives, advance the practice of midwifery, and achieve optimal, equitable health outcomes for the people and communities midwives serve. The organization provides professional practice materials, continuing education opportunities, and legislative updates. The peer-reviewed Journal of Nurse-Midwifery and Women's Health is ACNM's official journal.

Association for Population / Family Planning Libraries and Information Centers International (APLIC-I)

Annotation: The Association for Population / Family Planning Libraries and Information Centers International (APLIC-I) is a worldwide association of librarians and information specialists concerned with family planning, demography, and population-related issues. The association is a body of resource people who can assist in finding the appropriate organization or person for seeking an answer on a specific topic for health educators and special interest groups. Its mission is to develop effective documentation and information systems and services in the field of population and family planning; to provide professional networking among family planning and population documentarists, librarians, and information and communication specialists; and to provide continuing education to encourage professional development. The organization also sponsors conferences. Publications include a newsletter, the APLI C International Communicator, as well as special publications on population information topics including directories (all of these are electronic).

Blue Apple Players

Annotation: Blue Apple Players is dedicated to producing musicals, plays, and multi-media presentations for young people and families. With an emphasis on original works, and reaching across social, economic, and geographical boundaries, Blue Apple productions strive to educate, inspire, and entertain, teaching life lessons such as acceptance, patience, honesty, and perseverance. Each year, Blue Apple Players mounts up to four stage productions which tour throughout Kentucky, Indiana, Tennessee, Georgia, Illinois, Virginia and West Virginia. Each production is built on school curriculum. Blue Apple Players also has videos available to the public such as No More Secrets that addresses child sexual abuse, and Stop the Violence.

California Adolescent Heath Collaborative (CAHC)

Annotation: The California Adolescent Heath Collaborative (CAHC) is a public-private statewide coalition with the goal of increasing understanding and support for adolescent health and wellness in California. The CAHC brings together groups to share information around issues related to adolescent health topics such as mental health, use of health services, and budget issues. The collaborative also sponsors regional trainings; partners with the National Adolescent Health Information Center at the University of California San Francisco to prepare report cards and data guides to improve access to data on adolescent health; produces publications; and maintains a website that serves as a gateway to resources on adolescent health in California.

CHOICE

Annotation: CHOICE is a community-based organization dedicated to increasing awareness of and access to sexual health services, especially among underserved populations who traditionally experience barriers to care. CHOICE operates five bi-lingual (Spanish-English) hotlines and programs of community education and outreach. The hotlines include: the CHOICE Hotline for general reproductive and women's health information, serving the five-county Philadelphia area; the Pennsylvania Department of Public Health AIDS Fact Line for information about HIV/AIDS related issues which serves the entire state; the Children's Health Line which helps families obtain free or low cost health care and insurance coverage for their children; the CHOICE Teen Line, which provides sexual health counseling and education to young callers; and the Blueprint for a Safer Philadelphia Community Hotline that is part of a local effort to reduce youth homicides through a public health model. CHOICE is on the list of instructional resources recommended and approved by the Philadelphia School District to provide sexual health education in the City's public schools. CHOICE is currently active in 180 schools, after-school programs, community sites, hospitals, and churches. CHOICE offers online resources in English and Spanish.

Couple to Couple League, International (CCL)

Annotation: The Couple to Couple League, International (CCL) is an interfaith, nonprofit organization that helps couples develop the art of natural family planning. The League teaches the symptothermal method (STM), in which measurements of the cervix, cervical mucus, and basal body temperature are cross-checked to determine fertility or infertility. Publications include a bimonthly newsletter, CCL Family Foundations, and CCL Manual: The Art of Natural Family Planning. Printed and online catalogs are available, and materials are available in Spanish, Slovak, Polish, and Russian. The organization also sponsors conferences and training seminars.

Developing Families Center (DFC)

Annotation: The Developing Families Center (DFC) is a collaboration between three separate nonprofit organizations: the Family Health & Birth Center, The Healthy Babies Project, and the United Planning Organization Early Childhood Development Center to provide one stop, comprehensive health, child development and social services and supports to childbearing and childrearing families in Wards 5 and 6 in Washington, DC.

Disabled and Alone/Life Services for the Handicapped

Annotation: Disabled and Alone/Life Services for the Handicapped is a national nonprofit organization that works to ensure the well-being of people with disabilities after their parents die. Disabled and Alone helps parents of a handicapped child plan for when they will no longer be around; provides an alternative service program if other financial arrangements can not be made; advises parents, relatives, attorneys, and financial planners about planning for a handicapped individual; and provides advocacy and oversight for handicapped individuals whose families have left funds for their care. Local nonprofit direct service organizations are enlisted as partners in this endeavor. Services offered to consumers include referrals, publications, and reference information. The organization publishes a newsletter and sponsors conferences, workshops, and training seminars.

Family Planning National Training Centers

Annotation: The Family Planning National Training Centers (NTCs) work in tandem to enhance the capacity of Title X family planning grantees and agencies to deliver reproductive health services to the Title X community and beyond. The five NTCs include the National Clinical Training Center (CTC); the National Training Center for Service Delivery (SD); the National Training Center on Quality Assurance, Quality Improvement, and Evaluation (QA/QI/E); the National Training Center for Management and Systems Improvement (MSI); and the National Training Center for Coordination and Strategic Initiatives (CSI). Each NTC has specific areas of expertise and is responsible for developing and delivering training and technical support to the Title X grantees in coordination with other NTCs. Together, the NTCs seek to ensure that personnel working in Title X family planning service projects have the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to effectively deliver high quality family planning services in accordance with Title X laws, regulations, policies, and nationally recognized medical standards. The website provides resources such as fact sheets and other publications; webinars and courses; and information on events, legislation, new recommendations, and communities of practice. The NTCs are supported by the U.S. Office of Population Affairs.

Annotation: The Funders’ Network for Smart Growth and Livable Communities is a non-partisan, not-for-profit organization that exists to inspire, strengthen and expand philanthropic leadership and funders’ abilities to support organizations working to improve communities through better development decisions and growth policies. Georgetown University Medical Center, Center for Global Health Science and Security (GHSS)

Georgetown University, Institute for Reproductive Health (IRH)

Annotation: The Institute for Reproductive Health, formerly the Institute for International Studies in Natural Family Planning, located at Georgetown University, conducts research and provides technical assistance on improving access to natural methods and expanding family planning options for women and couples worldwide. The Institute's work focuses on developing simple new natural methods, providing technical assistance to strengthen service provision, developing appropriate training programs and teaching aids, conducting clinical and operations research, and collaborating with international organizations. The Institute has developed the "Standard Days Method" (SDM) - a natural method of family planning developed for women with menstrual cycles between 26 and 32 days (described in the results of a clinical trial published in the May 2003 issue of the journal Contraception). The Institute provides referrals and maintains an online resource library. Some materials are available in French and Spanish.

Guttmacher Institute ( )

Annotation: The Guttmacher Institute is a nonprofit corporation for research, policy analysis, and public education in the field of reproductive health. Services to consumers include publications and reference information. The institute publishes Perspectives on Sexual and Reproductive Health, International Family Planning Perspectives, The Guttmacher Policy Review, fact sheets, briefing papers, and special reports. A publications catalog is available. Some materials are available in Spanish, French, Asian, and other languages. The institute also has a list service, accessible through its Web site. The International Data Center allows users to build, download, and print custom tables, graphs, and maps using information from countries and regions.

Health Outreach Partners

U.S. Indian Health Service, Early Childhood Caries Collaborative

Annotation: The Indian Health Service (IHS) Early Childhood Caries (ECC) Initiative is a multi-faceted program designed to enhance knowledge about ECC prevention and early intervention among all health professionals and the community. The initiative provides the health care team (including oral health professionals, medical providers, community health representatives, Head Start staff, and WIC program staff) with the tools to begin a successful program. The website provides information on best practices, the Basic Screening Survey, a framework for ECC early intervention focusing on "caries stabilization," ECC programs, frequently asked questions, fluoride varnish, and other resources.
