American Geriatrics Society (AGS)

Annotation: The American Geriatrics Society (AGS) is an association of health care providers dedicated to improving the health and well-being of all older adults. AGS advocates for high quality, comprehensive accessible care and promotes research that expands knowledge of the aging process and the health care problems of older adults. The society provides public education and information and conducts education programs for health professionals. Publications include patient education materials, periodicals including the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, and AGS's Complete Guide to Aging and Health (for lay audiences). Membership is open to anyone with an interest in geriatric health care.

Brigham and Women's Hospital

Annotation: Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) is a teaching hospital of the Harvard Medical School providing patient care, medical education, and research. Handi maintains a comprehensive resource collection of educational materials on hemophilia and AIDS/HIV. Areas of emphasis are HIV risk reduction (including outreach and strategies for promoting and maintaining behavioral change in people at risk), living with hemophilia and AIDS/HIV, treatments for HIV infection, and finance and reimbursement issues. Publications include HANDI Resource Update, HIV Treatment Information Exchange, and various bibliographies, resource packets, and fact sheets. Publications are available in Spanish.

Learning about Diabetes

Annotation: Learning about Diabetes ia nonprofit corporation that provides consumers and health care professionals with information on diabetes care. The corporation develops low literacy health education programs and conducts research on the role of art and design in creating effective health care communications. Booklets in both English and Spanish, downloadable patient handouts, and visual education aids are available from the Web site. National Consumer Protection Week

RTI-UNC Evidence-based Practice Center (RTI-UNC EPC)

Annotation: The RTI-UNC Evidence-based Practice Center (EPC) produces systematic reviews and analyses of the scientific evidence (evidence reports and updates) on a variety of health care and health policy topics. It also builds on these reports to create materials and messages for patients and clinicians relating to health care decisions. EPC personnel also conduct research into the best practices and methods for conducting reviews of the scientific literature. The center prepares AHRQ reports and technology assessments as well as reports for other public and private health care organizations on topics of their choosing. Center staff also design and conduct customized literature searches and quantitative analyses. The Center is one of 13 EPCs sponsored by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).

University of North Carolina, Collaborative for Maternal and Infant Health

Annotation: UNC Collaborative for Maternal and Infant Health (CMIH) works to improve the health and well-being of women and families across North Carolina through research, community partnerships, and health care innovations. CMIH 1) collaborates with North Carolina hospitals, clinics, and communities to provide training on maternal warning signs and assistance with planning and implementing obstetric emergency protocols; 2) provides quality perinatal care to women across North Carolina; 3) provides clinicians with patient-education materials, including information on home blood pressure monitoring, post-birth warning signs, and breastfeeding; and 4) works with partners across the state to develop materials and trainings to best address care for pregnant and postpartum in NC jails and prisons. The collaborative also produces and disseminates postpartum self-care resources for new mothers, resources and information about infant safe sleep; and tobacco screening and cessation counseling tools for practitioners and patients.
