U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)

Annotation: The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) supports research designed to improve the quality of health care, reduce its cost, and broaden access to essential services. AHRQ supports the National Guideline Clearinghouse, a public resource for evidence-based clinical practice guidelines; the National Quality Measures Clearinghouse, a public resource for evidence-based quality measures and measure sets; the Patient Safety Network, a collection of patient safety news, literature, tools, and resources; and the Effective Health Care Program, a collection of research centers working to provide evidence on health care interventions.

American Hospital Association (AHA)

Annotation: The American Hospital Association (AHA), a membership association of individuals and health care delivery institutions, conducts research and education projects in areas such as health care administration, hospital economics, and community relations. The Resource Center offers ready reference information, research, document delivery, current awareness, and information alerting by searches of online databases. Services are directed primarily to health professionals. Some services have fees for members and nonmembers of AHA. A service and fee schedule is available through the web site at http://www.aha.org.

American Optometric Association (AOA)

Annotation: The American Optometric Association (AOA), founded in 1898, works to improve the quality, availability, and accessibility of eye care, vision care, and related health care. The association promotes standards of patient care and represents the optometric profession to government and other health care-related organizations. Publications include three periodicals: Journal of the American Optometric Association, American Optometric Association News, and Optometric Economics. The organization also sponsors conferences and training seminars. The association maintians offices in St. Louis, MO and metropolitan Washington, DC. Some materials are available in Spanish.

Brigham and Women's Hospital

Annotation: Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) is a teaching hospital of the Harvard Medical School providing patient care, medical education, and research. The hospital maintains the BWH Health and Education Library which provides access to 400 medical eBooks through the netLibrary; provides online access to pamphlets on over 100 health topics published by BWH; and staffs a reference/referral service. The hospital Web site provides electronic access to Health Topics A-Z, covering topics such as aging and health, adolescent health, sports and fitness, mental health, men's health, and women's health.

Disability Rights Wisconsin

Annotation: Disability Rights Wisconsin (DRW) is a private non profit organization which was founded in 1977. Designated by the Governor to ensure the rights of all state citizens with disabilities through individual advocacy and system change, DRW is part of a national system of federally mandated independent disability agencies. DRW helps people across Wisconsin gain access to services and opportunity through its advocacy and legal expertise. DRW regularly challenge systems and society to create positive change and improve the lives of people with disabilities. The agency also works on disability issues with state and local governments.

Enroll America

Annotation: Enroll America is a nonpartisan 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to maximize the number of uninsured Americans who enroll in health coverage made available by the Affordable Care Act. Enroll America is a collaborative organization, working with partners that span the gamut of health coverage stakeholders—health insurers, hospitals, doctors, pharmaceutical companies, employers, consumer groups, faith-based organizations, civic organizations, and philanthropies—to engage many different voices in support of an easy, accessible, and widely available enrollment process.

Health Legacy Partnership

Annotation: The Health Legacy Partnership, co-founded by the Joseph H. Kanter Family Foundation and the Agency for Healthcare Research & Quality (AHRQ), works to reward doctors' efforts to improve the delivery of quality healthcare; diminish healthcare disparities; improve healthcare decision making by giving people useful medical information based on scientific research; and support the development of a national outcomes database that will be used by doctors and patients to determine which treatments work best for specific diseases and conditions based on specific criteria of circumstances.

International Diabetes Center

Annotation: The International Diabetes Center provides education, clinical research, patient care, referrals, publications, and dissemination of information, technology, and service delivery programs for people with diabetes, their families, and concerned health professionals. The center sponsors conferences and training seminars and publishes a catalog and a newsletter. Some materials are available in Spanish. The center is a division of the Institute for Research and Education, Health System Minnesota and is designated a World Health Organization Collaborating Center for Diabetes Education Translation and Computer Technology.

March of Dimes (MOD)

Annotation: The March of Dimes (MOD) works to prevent birth defects and infant mortality through research, education, and advocacy programs. MOD's Pregnancy and Newborn Health Education Center provides information and referral services for the general public and professionals on topics such as preconception health, pregnancy, childbirth, genetics, and birth defects. MOD also produces educational materials on these and other topics such as prematurity, baby care, adolescent pregnancy, folic acid, nursing, and bereavement. A publications catalog is available, and some materials are available in Spanish. Anyone can subscribe to MOD's free electronic newsletter. MOD also sponsors the Prematurity Research Initiative, which provides funding for research into the causes of prematurity, and has developed PeriStats -- an online source for maternal, infant, and child health-related data at the state level and for many indicators at the county and national level (available at http://peristats.modimes.org/). The website can be viewed in English and Spanish.

National Consumer Protection Week

National Foundation for Facial Reconstruction (NFFR)

Annotation: The Mission of the National Foundation for Facial Reconstruction is to enable people, primarily children, with craniofacial conditions to lead productive, fulfilling lives. The NFFR provides assistance through its support of the Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery located at the New York University Medical Center. The broad range of programs includes: comprehensive surgical rehabilitation; medical research and professionals training; assistance in meeting social, psychological and financial needs; and programs to change attitudes towards individuals with a craniofacial condition. The Foundation publishes a newsletter.

National MCH Workforce Development Center

Annotation: The National MCH Workforce Development Center at the University of North Carolina provides workforce development for state Title V maternal and child health (MCH) program leaders and staff in implementing the Affordable Care Act (ACA), focusing on four key programmatic areas including access to care, quality improvement, systems integration, and population health management. In addition, the center helps to prepare the future MCH workforce with skills and knowledge to succeed in a transformed public health system under the ACA. The center serves as a consolidated national hub for the U.S. Maternal and Child Health Bureau's MCH Workforce Development Centers Program, engaging with key academic, policy, and public health practice partners and providing workforce development in each of the four key areas. It is operated in cooperation with the Association of Maternal and Child Health Programs (AMCHP). [Funded by the U.S. Maternal and Child Health Bureau]

National Perinatal Association (NPA)

Annotation: The National Perinatal Association (NPA) is a multidisciplinary membership organization concerned with perinatal health issues from preconception through infancy, within a multicultural perspective. The association works to foster optimal perinatal health and quality health care by promoting education, supporting research, influencing national priorities, and encouraging collaboration among all concerned constituencies, including health care providers and consumers. NPA sponsors conferences and training seminars, and publishes a newsletter. It provides a map of state perinatal associations and a list of these associations' conferences. It also has a database of support groups across the United States.

National Quality Forum (NQF)

Annotation: The National Quality Forum (NQF) is a not-for-profit membership organization created to develop and implement a national strategy for health care quality measurement and reporting. A shared sense of urgency about the impact of health care quality on patient outcomes, workforce productivity, and health care costs prompted leaders in the public and private sectors to create the NQF as a mechanism to bring about national change.

Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network, Data Coordinating Center (PECARN DCC)

Annotation: The Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network, Data Coordinating Center (PECARN DCC) provides a central repository for data generated by the research nodes and hospital affiliates of PECARN, a federally-funded pediatric emergency medicine research network that conducts high-priority, multi-institutional research on the prevention and management of acute illnesses and injuries in children and adolescents. The DCC also works with each of the RNC principal investigators to implement PECARN-wide standards for data collection and analysis in order to ensure uniformity and quality of the data and monitor the safety and timely progress of PECARN studies. PECARN is supported by cooperative agreements between six academic medical centers and the Health Resources and Services Administration, Maternal and Child Bureau, Emergency Medical Services for Children Program.

Safety Net Medical Home Initiative

Annotation: The Safety Net Medical Home Initiative helps 65 primary care safety net sites in five states become high-performing patient-centered medical homes. The website provides access to implementation guides, assessment tools, presentations, and other materials related to practice transformation, as well as resources on payment and recognition. The five-year initiative is supported by the Commonwealth Fund, Qualis Health, and the MacColl Center for Health Care Innovation at the Group Health Research Institute.

Starlight Children's Foundation

Annotation: Starlight Children's Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to brightening the lives of seriously ill children and their families. Working with pediatricians, technology experts, and the entertainment industry, Starlight Starbright creates programs to address the various social, emotional, and medical aspects of living with a chronic, serious, or life threatening illness or injury. The foundation's programs -- available not only to children and families, but also hospitals, clinics, schools, support groups, faith based organizations, and healthcare centers -- are designed to empower children and families to take charge of their illness, play a more active role in their treatment, and better cope with the challenges that accompany prolonged illness. The foundation has regional and international chapters, and was formed by a merger of the Starlight Foundation and the Starbright Foundation. Detailed information on the foundation's products and programs, including its electronic newsletter, are available on the Web site.
