Blue Star Families

Annotation: Blue Star Families is an organization by military families for military families aimed at supporting and empowering families, providing unflitered feedback to legislators, and helping non-profits connect the services they provide to military families. Founded in 2008, it has over 70 chapters on military bases and National Guard sites around the U.S. It has implemented a biennial Military Families Top Issues Survey. Its website provides blogs, media contacts, a resources list, and descriptions of programs, including Operation Appreciation, Books on Bases Smiles on Faces, Blue Star Museums (offering programs for military families), and other resources.

National Military Family Association (NMFA)

Annotation: The National Military Family Association (NMFA) advocates for improvements in the quality of military family life. The association works to educate military families concerning their rights, benefits, and services and to promote and protect the interest of military families by influencing the development and implementation of legislation and policies affecting them. NMFA produces a variety of publications including newsletters, fact sheets, news updates, position papers, and toolkits for children and youth in military families, and communities that support them.

U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, Health Services Research and Development Service (VA HSRD)

Annotation: The Veterans Affairs (VA) Health Services Research and Development Service (HSR&D) pursues research that underscores all aspects of VA healthcare: patient care, care delivery, health outcomes, cost, and quality. HSR&D research also addresses critical issues for Veterans returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan with conditions that may require care over their lifetimes. Within VA HSR&D, researchers focus on identifying and evaluating innovative strategies that lead to accessible, high quality, cost-effective care for Veterans and the nation.

University of Southern California School of Social Work, Center for Innovation and Research on Veterans and Military Families (CIR)

Annotation: The Center for Innovation and Research on Veterans and Military Families endeavors to strengthen the transition of veterans and their families into the community. Through four pillars—research, innovation, education/training and partnerships —CIR informs policymakers, trains providers, builds community networks and capacity, and drives applied research toward improving the lives of community-dwelling veterans and their families, with an emphasis on promising interventions that have broad applicability and scalability. With the help of its many partners and collaborators, CIR works to increase the capacity and competency of behavioral healthcare providers by informing and developing innovative education and training, and conducting research that directly addresses the transitions of military-impacted populations.
