Carolina Global Breastfeeding Institute (CGBI)

Annotation: The Carolina Global Breastfeeding Institute (CGBI) was established in 2006 within the Maternal and Child Health Department of the School of Public Health at UNC-Chapel Hill, CGBI furthers statewide, national, and global health by translating research and evidence into innovative program initiatives to increase understanding and support for optimal infant and young child feeding in relation to maternal and child health. The Institute works to normalize best practices of "the three B's" -- breastfeeding, birthspacing, and birth -- with attention to associated child health, survival, growth and development, and maternal reproductive health and survival. The website includes links to CGBI's breastfeeding-friendly initiatives, research findings, toolkits for action, and educational opportunities.

Child Health USA

Docs for Tots

Annotation: Docs For Tots is a nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy organization formed to encourage more doctors to serve as active advocates for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers on the national, state, and local levels. Formed in 2003, Docs For Tots encourages and supports doctors in a concentrated effort to respond to the requests of child advocacy organizations and others to participate in advocating for policies and practices that improve the well-being of young children. The organization develops issue-specific talking points, presentations, and training and technical assistance materials for use by its network of participating doctors and provides links to child advocacy organizations across the country.

First 5 Association of California

Annotation: The First 5 Association of California works to improve the lives of California's youngest children and their families through an effective, coordinated, and inclusive implementation of the California Children and Families Act at the local and state levels. The Act, also known as Proposition 10, was passed by the voters of California in 1998 to create a comprehensive and integrated system of information and services promoting early childhood development from prenatal to age 5, as well as to support the needs of parents of young children.

First 5 Shasta, Shasta Children and Families First Commission

Annotation: The Shasta Children and Families First Commission was formed in March 1999 in response to the California passage of the Children and Families Act, Proposition 10. This initiative aims to promote, support and improve the development of all children from the prenatal period to five years of age in California so children are healthy and ready for school. This organization covers Shasta County.

Illinois Breastfeeding Blueprint

Annotation: In 2008, a group of collaborators began an initiative to increase breastfeeding rates and decrease disparities in Illinois. HealthConnect One, the Illinois Department of Human Services' Title V Maternal and Child Health Program, and the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health committed to a multi-year effort to plan for strategic change in the way breastfeeding is supported in Illinois. Efforts involve advocacy and promotion to new mothers, hospitals, and communities.

International Baby Food Action Network (IBFAN)

Annotation: The International Baby Food Action Network (IBFAN) consists of public interest groups working around the world to reduce infant and young child morbidity and mortality. IBFAN aims to improve the health and well being of babies and young children, their mothers and their families through the protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding and optimal infant feeding practices. Information and publications are available online through IBFAN's Resource Center. Materials are available in English, French, German, Spanish, and Portuguese.

Parents Action for Children

Annotation: Parent Action for Children (PACt) is a nonprofit organization that works to raise awareness about the importance of early childhood development and school readiness. PAC develops, produces, and distributes resources for parents, early childhood professionals, child advocates, health care providers, policymakers and the media. The organization promotes public policies that help ensure our children have the physical wellbeing and the social, emotional and cognitive abilities they need to enter school ready to succeed.

U.S. Maternal and Child Health Bureau, Division of Healthy Start and Perinatal Services (MCHB DHSPS)

Annotation: The Division of Healthy Start and Perinatal Services (DHSPS) is one of five divisions of the Health Resources and Services Administration's (HRSA) Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB). The division provides national leadership that promotes healthy pregnancies and births and assures quality health care for all women. DPSWH develops and implements initiatives that focus on eliminating racial and ethnic disparities in perinatal and women's health, including comprehensive preventive services and programs that promote positive health behaviors. These initiatives include demonstration programs, partnerships with provider organizations and other federal agencies and bureaus, resource centers, mortality and morbidity review processes, and development of guidelines.

Grants are provided in areas such as agriculture, industry, health, education, economic planning, transport, and communications.
