Effective Public Health Practice Project (EPHPP)

Annotation: The Effective Public Health Practice Project (EPHPP), affiliated with McMaster University, produces evidence synthesis documents, including systematic reviews, for health practitioners and decision makers in order to inform the planning and delivery of public health services in Canada. The EPHPP also assists in developing the capacity of public health practitioners and policy-makers as informed consumers of literature, conducted reviews related to the effectiveness of public health programs and interventions, and produced resources focused on research methods and tools involved in synthesizing and appraising research evidence.

Health and Literacy Special Collection

Annotation: The Health and Literacy Special Collection supports the integration of health and literacy education on adult basic education programs and health literacy awareness in health care settings. The collection also strives to provide direct access to easy-to-read health information , and health resources in languages other than English. The Web site includes links to online listings of health information in 27 different languages: Amharic, Arabic, Bosnian, Cambodian/Khmer, Croatian, Chinese, Farsi/Persian, Filipino, French, Haitian Creole, Hindi, Hmong, Italian, Khmer/Cambodian, Korean, Laotian, Nuer, Portuguese, Punjabi, Russian, Samoan, Somali, Spanish, Tagalog, Thai, Tongan, and Vietnamese.

Health Literacy Media (HLM)

Annotation: Health Literacy Media (HLM, formerly Health Literacy Missouri) advocates for health literacy issues at the state and national level, working to effect policy change, inform stakeholders, and support and initiate grassroots and community activities. HLM provides fee-based services, programs, and materials to corporations, organizations, and health professionals. Services include a speakers bureau, readability services, field-testing of translated materials, training, program evaluation, printed and online material, local media communications, and building capacity for statewide initiatives.

Journeyworks Publishing

Annotation: Journeyworks Publishing produces health education promotion materials including pamphlets, brochures, posters, and bookmarks, in these topic areas: tobacco prevention, smoking cessation, secondhand smoke, sexual abstinence, pregnancy prevention, male involvement, HIV and STD prevention, birth control, prenatal care, child health and parenting, drugs and alcohol, violence prevention, stress, mental wellness, fitness and nutrition, date rape, gay youth, women's health, Alzheimer's disease, and materials in Spanish, Vietnamese, and Chinese. It also produces the Luann health series designed for the adolescent audience. Materials are directed at diverse audiences, and some are for low literacy audiences.

Megaskills Education Center (HSI)

Annotation: The MegaSkills Education Center is dedicated to enhancing achievement in students by developing "megaskills," which include confidence, motivation, effort, responsibility, initiative, perseverance, caring, teamwork,common sense, problem solving, andfocus. The MegaSkills Education Center offers resources to help develop partnerships with schools and communities and to build success for children, parents and teachers through books, trainings, and conference presentations. The MegaSkills programs, now in over 4000 schools in 48 states, serve diverse communities by training teachers to conduct workshops and provide home learning "recipes" for families.

National Institute for Literacy (NIFL)

Annotation: The National Institute for Literacy (NIFL) was created by the National Literacy Act of 1991. NIFL serves as a focal point for public and private activities that support the development of regional, sate, and national literacy services. The goal of NIFL is to ensure that all Americans with literacy needs have access to services that can help them. NIFL provides LINCS, an Internet-based information retrieval and and communication system. The institute promotes adult literacy through a long-term initiative, Equipped for the Future. NIFL supports a national literacy hotline that provides callers with information about adult and family literacy services in their communities. NIFL also makes a variety of publications available in print and online.

Partnership for Healthy Mouths Healthy Lives

Annotation: The Dental Trade Alliance is an association of companies that provide dental equipment, supplies, materials, and services to dentists and other oral health professionals. Member companies are distributors, dental laboratories, and manufacturers located in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The alliance strives to promote and achieve sustained market growth, serve as a strong voice for the industry in public policy and regulatory matters, and be the premier source for member serv ces that enhance success.

University of Maryland School of Public Health, Horowitz Center for Health Literacy

Annotation: The Herschel S. Horowitz Center for Health Literacy (The Horowitz Center) was established in 2007 to make health care systems less intimidating, more user-friendly, and ultimately more effective for consumers. The center educates the health care work force, educators, and policymakers about both the need to communicate more effectively and about the strategies they can employ to be better heard and understood. The center also educates the public about how to be a better consumer health care.
