Council on Women and Girls

Annotation: The White House's Council on Women and Girls -- established with the signing of an Executive Order by President Barack Obama in March 2009 -- will focus on ensuring that each of the federal agencies is working to directly improve the economic status of women and ensure that administrative policies aim to balance work and family. The Council with also work hand-in-hand with the Vice President, the Justice Department’s Office of Violence Against Women, and other government officials to find new ways to prevent violence against women, at home and abroad. Another top priority of the Council is to help build healthy families and improve women’s health care.

National Association of Commissions for Women (NACW)

Annotation: NACW is a non-partisan membership organization composed of regional, state, county and local commissions created to improve the status of women. NACW serves as a national voice for commissions for women in the United States, its territories, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. NACW advocates on myriad public issues in efforts to attain equity and justice for women and their families in the home and in the workplace. NACW helps low income women become self-sufficient, encourages job development, and supports women's health initatives, research, and other action agendas.

National Council of Women's Organizations (NCWO)

Annotation: The National Council of Women's Organizations (NCWO) is a nonpartisan network of more than one hundred women's organizations working together to advocate change on many issues of importance to women. Significant areas of involvement include equal employment opportunity, economic equity, media equality, education, job training, women's health and reproductive health, mid-life and aging/retired women, girls and young women, homemakers, minority groups, and business and professional women.

National Organization for Women

Annotation: The National Organization for Women (NOW) is an organization of feminist activists whose goal is to bring about equality for all women. Through its 550 chapters located in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, NOW works to eliminate discrimination and harassment in the workplace, schools, the justice system, and all other sectors of society; secure abortion, birth control and reproductive rights for all women; end all forms of violence against women; eradicate racism, sexism and homophobia; and promote equality and justice in our society.

National Organization for Women Foundation

Annotation: The National Organization for Women Foundation is devoted to furthering women's rights through education and litigation. The Foundation is affiliated with the National Organization for Women, an organization of feminist activists whose goal is to bring about equality for all women.

UNICEF, the United Nation's Children's Fund

Annotation: UNICEF, the United Nation's Children's Fund, works with others around the globe to overcome the obstacles caused by poverty, violence, disease, and discrimination. UNICEF promotes immunization, works to prevent the spread of HIV/Aids among young people, promotes girls' education and gender equality, and advocates for children. Information by country, contained on the Web site, includes basic health indicators such as mortality and life expectancy; efforts in advocacy, education, and fundraising; and guidelines for becoming involved. UNICEF's Innocenti Research Centre helps to identify and research areas that are vital to the current and future work of the organization. A publications catalog is available online. Interested individuals are invited to subscribe to receive electronic news alerts.

United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)

Annotation: The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is an international source of funding for population and reproductive health programs that help women, men and young people plan their families and avoid unwanted pregnancies, undergo pregnancy and childbirth safely, avoid sexually transmitted infections(STIs), including HIV/AIDS, and combat violence against women. UNFPA also helps governments in the world's poorest countries and in other countries in need, to formulate population policies and strategies in support of sustainable development. UNFPA publications, exploring topics such as reproductive health, maternal mortality, gender equality and population and development strategies, can be downloaded from the Web site.

Wellesley Centers for Women

Annotation: The Wellesley Centers for Women (WCW) unites the Center for Research on Women and the Stone Center for Developmental Services and Studies in Interdisciplinary Efforts to promote positive change for women and girls. Center scholars conduct research, training, and analysis, and search for ways to translate findings into obtainable goals. WCW conducts conferences and publishes reports, papers, audiotapes, and videotapes on a variety of topics including adolescence, aging, feminism, sexuality, violence, child care, parenting, work and family, education, mental health, and psychological development.

Wellesley College Center for Research on Women

Annotation: As a component of the Wellesley Centers for Women, the Center for Research on Women houses an interdisciplinary community of scholars engaged in research programs and publications which examine the lives of women, men, and children in a changing world. Center activities include improving school-aged child care, informing the public about gender equity in education, conducting research on women's employment, investigating child health and adolescent development among diverse groups, and providing information on work and family leave policies. A publications list is available and a biannual newsletter, Research Report, is also published. The Center also sponsors workshops and conferences.
