U.S. Administration for Children and Families (ACF)

Annotation: The U.S. Administration for Children and Families (ACF) administers programs focusing on the well-being of children and the self-sufficiency of families. Some services at ACF include programs involving persons with developmental disabilities, child care, child welfare services, prevention and treatment of child abuse and neglect, runaway and homeless youth, Head Start, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), and child support enforcement issues. ACF also supports an Healthy Marriage Initiative which focuses on low-income married couples with children, the Fatherhood Initiative, and the Family Violence Prevention and Services Program. ACF provides consumers with referrals, publications, and reference information. Some materials are available in Spanish. The agency also publishes newsletters, and sponsors conferences and training seminars.

Families and Work Institute

Annotation: The Families and Work Institute is a nonprofit organization that explores ways to balance continuing workplace productivity demands and the changing needs of families. The institute conducts research on issues related to the changing demographics of the workforce; child and elder care demands, services, and impacts on work; as well as workplace research that helps employers respond to identified needs. It provides information dissemination, strategic planning, technical assistance, and management training services for decision makers in business, communities, and government. It is conducting the I am Your Child Early Childhood Public Engagement Campaign, and also has a Fatherhood Project.

Fatherhood Research and Practice Network (FRPN)

Annotation: The Fatherhood Research and Practice Network (FRPN) funds projects that support rigorous evaluation research on fatherhood programs and services within the areas of responsible fatherhood, economic security, and co-parenting / healthy relationships. The FPRN also provides a variety of technical assistance including one-on-one consulting services and mentoring/peer support, as well as web-based communication platforms for researchers and practitioners. Resources include briefs that highlight key steps in the process of conducting an evaluation of a fatherhood program, reports that outline research gaps and opportunities for future evaluation, and an e-newsletter. The FRPN is a project of the U.S. Administration for Children and Families, Office of Planning, Research, and Evaluation and is led by Temple University and the Denver Center for Policy Research.

Fathers' Network

Annotation: The National Fathers Network advocates for fathers of children with special health needs through support and mentoring programs, conferences and training seminars, a newsletter, a Web page, development of curriculum, and ongoing work with professionals to enhance service delivery for all family members. Services to consumers include referrals, publications, and reference information. Some materials are available in Spanish.

National Center for Fathering

Annotation: National Center for Fathering (NCF) seeks to inspire and equip men to be better fathers through seminars and small groups. It provides fathering resources through its newsletter and web page. NCF provides direct father training and resources as well as train-the-trainer seminars and resources for those who work with dads. Materials are available in Spanish and Asian languages.

National Center on Fathers and Families (NCOFF)

Annotation: The National Center on Fathers and Families (NCOFF) is an interdisciplinary policy research center which works to expand the knowledge base on father involvement and family development, strengthen practice, and contribute to the advancement of policy through research, practice, and policy analysis. NCOFF bases its work on seven core areas that affect father involvement: joblessness, father presence, father's expression of care, importance of co-parenting, transition from biological to committed parent, intergenerational learning, and systemic barriers. Research and information on each topic is accessible online through the FatherLit Research Database. Publications include full-text briefs, literature reviews, working papers, and a state policy series. The center appears to have gone dormant in 2001, but materials are still posted to the Web site.

National Family Preservation Network (NFPN)

Annotation: The National Family Preservation Network (NFPN) serves as a national voice for the preservation of families, through initiatives in the areas of family preservation, reunification, and father-involvement. NFPN offers research-based tools, training resources, and technical assistance to public and private child- and family-serving agencies.

National Fatherhood Initiative (NFI)

Annotation: The National Fatherhood Initiative (NFI), founded in 1994, is a non-profit organization that endeavors to improve the well-being of children by increasing the number of children growing up with loving, committed and responsible fathers. NFI conducts public awareness campaigns, organizes conferences, and provides resource materials to organizations wanting to establish support programs for fathers. NFI publishes a quarterly newsletter, Fatherhood Today. NFI provides publications such as Father Facts 3 containing national data on trends in fatherhood. NFI also publishes a Fatherhood Resource Catalog listing books, tapes, and other fatherhood products.

National Partnership for Community Leadership (NPCL)

Annotation: The National Partnership for Community Leadership (NPCL), formerly known as the National Center for Strategic Nonprofit Planning and Community Leadership, is a nonprofit organization created for charitable and educational purposes. The organizations works to strengthen community leadership through family and neighborhood empowerment and to improve the governance and administration of nonprofit, tax-exempt organizations. NPCL offers an array of services to community-based organizations, including guidance on starting nonprofit organizations, financial and program management services, outreach and service delivery, administrative support, and leadership development. The organization has developed the Partners for Fragile Families program, which is a national initiative working at the federal, state, and local levels to help fathers overcome poverty and build stronger links to their children and their children's mothers.

National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse

Annotation: The National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse (NRFC) supports the Administration for Children and Families' Office of Family Assistance's (OFA) efforts to assist states and communities to promote and support responsible fatherhood and healthy marriage. Primarily a tool for professionals operating Responsible Fatherhood programs, the NRFC provides access to print and electronic publications, timely information on fatherhood issues, and targeted resources that support OFA-funded Responsible Fatherhood and Healthy Marriage grantees. The NRFC Web site also provides essential information for other audiences interested in fatherhood issues.

Promoting Responsible Fatherhood

Annotation: Promoting Responsible Fatherhood (formerly known as the Fatherhood Initiative) was developed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to support and strengthen the roles of fathers in families. The Web site links to projects related to effective parenting, healthy marriage, economic stability, incarceration, visitation and child support, research, and program developments.

Public/Private Ventures (P/PV)

Annotation: Public/Private Ventures is a national nonprofit organization whose mission is to improve the effectiveness of social policies, programs and community initiatives, especially as they affect youth and young adults. In carrying out this mission, P/PV works with philanthropies, the public and business sectors, and nonprofit organizations. Services to consumers include publications and reference information. Publications include policy papers, guidebooks, a catalog, an annual report, and a newsletter, Public/Private Ventures News.
