American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM)

Annotation: The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) promotes and integrates scientific research, education and practical applications of sports medicine and exercise science to maintain and enhance physical performance, fitness, health, and quality of life. ACSM offers members informational publications and video materials, meetings, and continuing education. Membership is open to interested individuals as well as health professionals.

International Food Information Council Foundation (IFIC)

Annotation: The International Food Information Council (IFIC) is a nonprofit organization that serves as an information and educational resource on nutrition and food safety. IFIC provides science-based information to journalists, health professionals, government officials, and other opinion leaders who communicate with the public. Wherever possible, IFIC works in partnership with leading nutrition organizations. IFIC programs receive support from a broad base of food, beverage and agricultural companies. Services to consumers include referrals, publications and reference information. The council also publishes a newsletter. Some materials are available in Spanish. The foundation produces a Web site for children and parents called Kidnetic.com, which provides activities for children and information for parents to promote physical activity, exercise, and good eating.

PE Central

Annotation: PE Central provides information and programs for those responsible for teaching children in physical activity settings. Although the organization primarily caters to physical education teachers, it does offer information for parents and programs for students as well. Examples of PE Central programs include "Log It" -- an internet-based pedometer step-logging program (located at http://www.peclogit.org), and Get Active Stay Active, a program for teens (located at http://getactivestayactive.com)

Shape Up America! (SUA)

Annotation: Shape Up America! is a national initiative to promote healthy weight for life among Americans of all ages. It provides responsible information on weight loss and prevention of weight gain, healthy eating and increased physical activity. In 2000, Shape Up America! launched a campaign to highlight the link between obesity and type 2 diabetes and continues to focus on the prevention of this dual ailment among Americans at high risk. In 2004, the organization re-committed itself to the prevention and treatment of childhood obesity.
