U.S. Administration for Children and Families (ACF)

Annotation: The U.S. Administration for Children and Families (ACF) administers programs focusing on the well-being of children and the self-sufficiency of families. Some services at ACF include programs involving persons with developmental disabilities, child care, child welfare services, prevention and treatment of child abuse and neglect, runaway and homeless youth, Head Start, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), and child support enforcement issues. ACF also supports an Healthy Marriage Initiative which focuses on low-income married couples with children, the Fatherhood Initiative, and the Family Violence Prevention and Services Program. ACF provides consumers with referrals, publications, and reference information. Some materials are available in Spanish. The agency also publishes newsletters, and sponsors conferences and training seminars.

American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research (AEI)

Annotation: Founded in 1943, the American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research (AEI) sponsors research on government policy, the American economy, and politics. The Institute represents a conservative position in politics and a free-market stance in economics, which are its primary objects of research. It is a nonprofit organization, with an internal press, publishing papers and American Enterprise magazine.

Beacon Hill Institute for Public Policy Research (BHI)

Annotation: The Beacon Hill Institute for Public Policy Research focuses on federal, state, and local economic policies as they affect U.S. voters and businesses and as they impinge, in particular, on the Massachusetts economy. The institute, which is part of Suffolk University in Boston, uses state-of-the-art statistical, mathematical, and econometric methods to provide timely and readable analyses that help voters, policy makers, and opinion leaders understand today's leading public policy issues. Bipartisan Policy Center

Annotation: The Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC), founded in 2007, is a non-profit organization that works to promote health, security, and opportunity for all Americans. The center's policy solutions are the product of informed deliberations by former elected and appointed officials, business and labor leaders, and academics and advocates representing the political spectrum. Topics include health, energy, national and homeland security, the economy, housing, immigration, infrastructure, and governance.

Cascade Policy Institute

Annotation: The Cascade Policy Institute is a free-market think-tank located in Oregon, focused on issues of individual liberty, educational choice, and limited government. It is a non-profit organization. In addition to the publication of papers, a newsletter, and research, the institute hosts speakers on public policy issues and facilitates Children's Scholarship Fund -- Portland, which provides private scholarships for several hundred low income K-12 students to attend the private schools of their choice.

Center for National Policy (CNP)

Annotation: The Center for National Policy is a source of research and papers on domestic and foreign policy as well as socioeconomic trends. Recent projects focus on issues including worker compensation and labor economics, community development and urban revitalization, nuclear energy policy, affirmative action, and immigration. The center publishes a newsletter two times a year and sponsors conferences.

U.S. Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion (CNPP)

Annotation: The Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion (CNPP) under the U.S. Department of Agriculture develops the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the Food Guide Pyramid, the Interactive Healthy Eating Index, Expenditures on Children by Families, the Cost of Food at Home, the Nutrient Content of the U.S. Food Supply, and the new ChooseMyPlate initiative. CNPP staff help to define and coordinate nutrition education policy within USDA and to translate nutrition research into information and materials for consumers; policymakers; and professionals in health, education, industry, and media. The Center publishes a journal, Family Economics and Nutrition Review, and distributes publications for health professionals and consumers. Some materials are available in Spanish. The Center also sponsors conferences.

Annotation: The Child and Family Policy Center (CFPC) is a nonprofit research and advocacy organization promoting outcome-based policies that improve child well-being. The center focuses on a range of policy areas in Iowa, including child care and early education, health and well-being, and family economic success. CFPC also conducts national evaluation work focused on early-childhood system building and policy development promoting comprehensive, asset-based approaches to supporting children and families.

Council on Women and Girls

Annotation: The White House's Council on Women and Girls -- established with the signing of an Executive Order by President Barack Obama in March 2009 -- will focus on ensuring that each of the federal agencies is working to directly improve the economic status of women and ensure that administrative policies aim to balance work and family. The Council with also work hand-in-hand with the Vice President, the Justice Department’s Office of Violence Against Women, and other government officials to find new ways to prevent violence against women, at home and abroad. Another top priority of the Council is to help build healthy families and improve women’s health care.

Economic Policy Institute

Annotation: The Economic Policy Institute (EPI) is a think-tank primarily devoted to interpreting economic data- particularly unemployment, poverty, inflation, American trade and industry issues, and the economic adjustments of the individual. It publishes several journals and a biannual review: State of Working America.

Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA)

Annotation: Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) is a national student organization that helps young men and women become leaders and address important personal, family, work, and societal issues through family and consumer sciences education. More than 225,000 members in chapters across the country participate in projects that focus on youth concerns such as teen pregnancy, parenting, family relationships, substance abuse, peer pressure, the environment, nutrition and fitness, teen violence and career exploration. FCCLA sponsors conferences, workshops, and training seminars, and provides curricula, books for adult leaders and adolescents, other educational materials (these can be purchased from the online store).

Annotation: The Goldman School of Public Policy at the University of California, Berkeley, formerly the University of California Graduate School of Public Policy, is a 2-year Master of Public Policy program. The program combines economic analysis with sociology, legal studies, and issue analysis.

Heartland Institute

Annotation: The Heartland Institute is a national nonprofit organization founded in 1984 and headquartered in Chicago. It publishes three monthly newspapers--Health Care News, School Reform News, and Environment & Climate News--as well as a bimonthly public policy magazine, Intellectual Ammunition; a monthly members' newsletter, The Heartlander; and a biweekly newsletter on tort reform, Lawsuit Abuse Fortnightly. Heartland has a staff of 14 and a 2002 budget of $2 million. Its publications reach every state and federal legislator in the United States as well as tens of thousands of grassroots activists and policy analysts.

Annotation: The Home Economics Archive: Research, Tradition and History (HEARTH) Project at Cornell University provides digital images of published works between 1850 and 1950 on the topic of home economics, including applied art and design; child care, human development and family studies; clothing and textiles; food and nutrition; home management; housekeeping and etiquette; housing, furnishing and home equipment; hygiene; institutional management; retail and consumer studies; and teaching and communication.

Population Resource Center (PRC)

Annotation: The Population Resource Center (PRC) is a nonprofit organization, founded in 1975, which serves as a resource for policymakers in government, business and the not-for-profit sector on the relationship of demographic trends to socio-economic, political, and environmental issues. The center provides briefings, discussions, presentations, and publications offered by experts in the fields of demographic research, population, international affairs, economic development, reproductive health, family planning, and the environment. Russell Sage Foundation (RSF)

Annotation: The Russell Sage Foundation is devoted exclusively to research in the social sciences. The Foundation currently pursues three principal areas of study: 1) research on the future of work, including the causes and consequences of the decline in demand for low-skill workers in advanced economies; 2) a program of research on immigration, focusing on the adaptation of the second generation to American society; and 3) a program on cultural contact that focuses on understanding and improving relations between racial and ethnic groups in schools, workplaces, and neighborhood settings. In addition, the Foundation has a Visiting Scholar program which invites 20 scholars per academic year to New York City to pursue research project s which are typically related to the Foundation's current programs. The Foundation publishes, under its own imprint, the books that derive from the work of its grantees and Visiting Scholars as well as catalogs and newsletters several times a year.

U.S. Administration for Children and Families, Office of Planning, Research, and Evaluation (ACF-OPRE)

Annotation: The U.S. Administration for Children and Families' Office of Planning, Research, and Evaluation (OPRE) is responsible for performance management, conducts research and policy analyses, and develops and oversees research and evaluation projects to assess program performance and inform policy and practice. The Office provides guidance, analysis, technical assistance, and oversight to ACF programs on: strategic planning; performance measurement; research and evaluation methods; statistical, policy, and program analysis; and synthesis and dissemination of research and demonstration findings. OPRE includes the Division of Economic Independence and the Division of Child and Family Development.

University of Pennsylvania, Center for Mental Health Policy and Services Research (CMHPSR)

Annotation: The Center for Mental Health Policy and Services Research, a part of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health Services within the University of Pennsylvania Health System, is concerned with the junction of economic factors with the provision of mental health care. The Center conducts research based on raw data and conducts experimental programs revolving around funding and management principally of public services. Its goals are the improvement in quality of care and the understanding of the impact of changes in the system. The Center sponsors conferences and training seminars, but does not provide services to consumers.
