Annotation: DC Action for Children (DC ACT) is an independent, nonprofit, multi-issue advocacy group dedicated to improving the lives of children and families in the District of Columbia. The organization advocates for building community-wide support for preventive, comprehensive, and integrated services delivered at the neighborhood level. DC ACT works with local providers, policy makers, and citizens on behalf of the District's children and families to assure that their basic needs are met and their rights are protected. Activities include compiling information, testifying at local legislative hearings, sponsoring workshops and public forums, educating the public about children/family issues, facilitating public/private partnerships to best serve the needs of the city's children, publishing a quarterly newsletter and an annual review of the District budget. DC ACT also convenes and cofounded the Children's Health Care Coalition of DC.

Annotation: The Developing Families Center (DFC) is a collaboration between three separate nonprofit organizations: the Family Health & Birth Center, The Healthy Babies Project, and the United Planning Organization Early Childhood Development Center to provide one stop, comprehensive health, child development and social services and supports to childbearing and childrearing families in Wards 5 and 6 in Washington, DC.

Annotation: The District of Columbia Department of Health (DC DOH) Dental Services sponsors a school-based oral health program (SBOHP) that provides onsite access to care for children at-risk for not receiving oral health services. The program provides free basic dental services to children at partnering public schools, public charter schools, and Head Start and early childhood learning centers. Participating schools/sites must have at least 50% of its student population enrolled in the national free or reduced-price lunch program. Services are provided to children onsite using portable dental units and include dental sealant application, fluoride treatment, dental screenings and dental prophylaxis (cleanings), oral health literacy, education and promotion, and dental referrals. Services are provided by licensed dentists and/or oral health educators. All children must have a signed parental consent form in order to receive services. Students who need more advanced care are referred to dental clinics and dental offices for further treatment. All new school-based health centers include dental services.

Annotation: The Metropolitan Washington Public Health Assessment Center (MWPHAC) aims to improve the health of the population of the Washington metropolitan region by contributing to efforts to enhance the quality and availability of population-based health data, including developing Web-based access to data and analytic tools. MWPHAC is pursuing long-term objectives to improve the availability, timeliness, accuracy, and comparability of local population-based health data; to develop statistical and epidemiological methods relevant to local public health assessment efforts; and to serve as a model of cooperation between local health agencies and schools of public health to promote education of students and faculty in local public health practice. Health data, health indicators, reports, and links are posted on the center's Web site.

Annotation: The Mid-Atlantic Network of Youth and Family Services (MANY) is a network designed to strengthen and coordinate resources and services for youth in high risk situations and their families. MANY offers consultation, training workshops, and information on program innovations, funding, legislation, and policy. The Network also maintains an online Knowledge Center, which is organized to address the 6 key components of operating community services that support the positive development of youth.

Annotation: The New York-Mid-Atlantic Consortium for Genetic and Newborn Screening Services (NYMAC) was established in September 2004 as one of seven regional collaboratives in the country funded by the Genetic Services Branch in the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA)'s Maternal and Child Health Bureau. The charge of this group is to develop a regional approach to address the maldistribution of genetic resources in the New York-Mid-Atlantic region, which includes Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia. The Wadsworth Center, New York State Department of Health is the lead institution for this project.

Annotation: Sudden Infant Death Services of the Mid-Atlantic (SIDS Mid-Atlantic) has as its mission to support family members and others who have been affected by the sudden and unexpected death of an infant; and to educate the public and professional community about infant death, including sudden infant death syndrome and its risk factors. SIDS Mid-Atlantic serves Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia. SIDS Mid-Atlantic has also merged with Two Tiny Hands (www.twotinyhands.com) to provide support to siblings of babies who have died. A Spanish-speaking staff member and some materials in Spanish are provided.

Annotation: The Center for Applied Research and Urban Policy (CARUP) conducts research on problems that affect the social and economic health of urban areas, particularly the District of Columbia. It provides technical assistance to urban managers and policymakers with special emphasis placed on interdisciplinary approaches to problem solving. Activities include research on issues such as homelessness, housing, public education, transportation, and maternal and infant health; technical assistance to clients such as government agencies, school systems, organized community groups, and nonprofit organizations; training; and dissemination of research results for educational and informational purposes. Services to consumers include publications. Some materials are available in Spanish. The center publishes a newsletter and sponsors conferences and training programs.
