Child Development Media

Choosy Kids

Annotation: Choosy Kids offers training and educational materials for health professionals, teachers, and parents to help young children develop healthy behaviors. Topics include obesity, oral health, nutrition, and physical activity. The site also provides news, information about events, links to resources by topic and by audience such as Head Start and WIC programs, and tools for submitting and sharing resources with others.

Committee for Children

Annotation: The Committee for Children promotes the safety, well-being, and social development of children through developing bullying, youth violence, and child abuse prevention curricula and videos for educators, families, and communities. The Committee sponsors Steps to Respect, a bullying prevention program geared towards children in the upper elementary grades; Second Step, a curriculum for preschool to junior high students which teaches social skills to reduce impulsive and aggressive behavior in children and increase their level of social competence; and Talking About Touching, a personal safety curriculum. Information is provided on foundations of research and outcome evaluations for individual programs. Consultation and technical assistance on program implementation is also available. Links to related conferences, funding opportunities, and statistics are provided.

Health Sciences Consortium (HSC)

Annotation: The Health Sciences Consortium (HSC) is an international nonprofit educational publishing cooperative that enables health science institutions to develop and share quality instructional materials. The consortium works to increase the variety and quantity of instructional materials available to health science institutions and to offer these materials at a reduced cost to its members. More than 700 titles are offered in a variety of media formats, including videotapes, CD-Rom and DVD. A health sciences discipline catalog, and a newsletter are available.

Healthy Roads Media

Annotation: The Healthy Roads Media Web site contains free audio, written, and multimedia health education materials in a number of languages, including Arabic, Bosnian, Hmong, Khmer, Russian, Somali,Spanish, and Vietnamese. These materials are being developed in an effort to study the value of various formats in providing health information for diverse populations. Topics covered include domestic violence, asthma, cancer, dental health, diabetes, diseases and conditions, exercise, health services, heart health, immunization, nutrition, smoking, tuberculosis, and women's health. Partners in this project include Family HealthCare Center, Healthway Software, Fargo Cass Public Health, the Center for New Americans, the North Dakota State Data Center, and the North Dakota State University Library.

Infant-Parent Institute

Annotation: The Infant-Parent Institute is a private teaching and clinical service institute that specializes in problems of attachment in infants and adults. The institute is independent and receives no public funding. Services to consumers include referrals, clinical assessment, psychotherapy, parent consultation, publications, and reference information. The Institute sponsors some conferences, training seminars, and workshops. Training materials include a newsletter and a library of 14 documentary videotapes.

InJoy Birth and Parenting Education

Johns Hopkins Center for Communications Programs, Media/Materials Clearinghouse (M/MC)

Annotation: The Media/Materials Clearinghouse (M/MC) at the Johns Hopkins University Center for Communication Programs is an international resource for health professionals who seek samples of pamphlets, posters, videos, and other media/materials designed to promote public health. The clearinghouse provides access to Mediabank, a database of health communications materials; Netlinks, a database of internet health resources for public health; Photoshare, a database of health-related photographs available for nonprofit use; and Videoshare, a database of videos for public health. The M/MC also manages the Health Communications Materials Network (HCMN), an international network of professionals specializing in the development of health communication materials. HCMN serves as a forum for health communication specialists to share ideas, information, and samples of health communication materials with colleagues, and to seek advice and suggestions from others working in the field. HCMN also has an online database of clip art which can be used in developing health communication materials. The clearinghouse provides publications in both electronic and print form, and materials are available in Spanish, French, Asian, and other languages. M/MC publishes a newsletter.

Kids on the Block

Annotation: Kids on the Block offers puppet programs designed to help children learn to interact and work together. Programs cover more than 40 topics related to disabilities and mainstreaming, educational differences, medical differences, and social concerns. Program materials include a teacher/user manual, audiotapes, props, a coordinator's manual, and educational materials. Also available are puppeteer training workshops, performances by the national company, and a videotape. The organization also publishes a newsletter.

Library of Congress, Digital Collections

Annotation: The Digital Collections service focuses on photographs, manuscripts, maps, sound recordings, motion pictures and books, as well as "born digital" materials such as websites. Topics include American history and culture, historic newspapers, international collections, legislative information, performing arts, prints and photographs, veteran history, early sound recordings, website archiving, and other collections.

Megaphone Project

Annotation: The Megaphone Project amplifies the voices of under-served communities and those who advocate for them in order to increase political access, inspire action and create social change. The project accomplishes this through message development, media production, and targeted media distribution. Their messages and media productions have contributed to reform in the criminal justice system, public housing, predatory lending, real estate development, public transit and day labor. The Web site provides film clips, access to a mailing list for project announcements, and a store for purchase of DVDs. Its focus is first on the city of Baltimore then on the state of Maryland.

National Audiovisual Center (NAC)

Annotation: The National Audiovisual Center (NAC) is the primary distribution point for federally produced audiovisual programs. The center responds to inquiries from consumers and professionals. The center's Web site offers online catalogs, product listings, product announcements, an online newsletter, and access to other sites. The Center's publications include a catalog and newsletter. Materials are also available in Spanish language.

Wisconsin Clearinghouse For Prevention Resources (WCH)

Annotation: The Wisconsin Clearinghouse For Prevention Resources is an official information and materials resource for the state of Wisconsin that also serves schools, agencies, programs, community groups, and businesses nationwide. Its goal is to strengthen individuals, families, and communities. The Clearinghouse provides a wide range of educational materials and services to prevention specialists, counselors, and other professionals. Topics include alcohol and other drugs, curricula and teacher resources, high-risk youth and high-risk behaviors, resources for programs and professionals, tobacco and smoking, fetal alcohol syndrome, primary prevention and health promotion, mental health, and families and substance abuse prevention. Posters, publications and videotapes are available. Some materials are available in Spanish, plus a few items also available in Chinese, Vietnamese, Cambodian, and Korean. The organization publishes a quarterly newsletter.
