National Association for Health and Fitness (NAHF)

Annotation: The National Association for Health and Fitness (NAHF), a nonprofit organization, seeks to improve the quality of of life for individuals in the United States through the promotion of physical fitness, sports, and healthy lifestyles and by fostering and supporting state Governor's Councils on Physical Fitness and Sports in the United States and its territories. Membership consists of state governor's councils. NAHF sponsors National Employee Health and Fitness, a work site health and fitness event, and Let's Get Physical, the national fitness challenge.

PE Central

Annotation: PE Central provides information and programs for those responsible for teaching children in physical activity settings. Although the organization primarily caters to physical education teachers, it does offer information for parents and programs for students as well. Examples of PE Central programs include "Log It" -- an internet-based pedometer step-logging program (located at http://www.peclogit.org), and Get Active Stay Active, a program for teens (located at http://getactivestayactive.com)

President's Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition (PCFSN)

Annotation: The President's Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition (PCFSN) engages, educates, and empowers all Americans to adopt a healthy lifestyle that includes regular physical activity and good nutrition. Since 1956, the Council has created and promoted programs and initiatives that motivate people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities to be active and eat healthy

Special Olympics (SO)

Annotation: Special Olympics (SO) is an international organization that promotes understanding, acceptance, and inclusion between people with and without intellectual disabilities through year-round sports training and athletic competition and other related programming. SO provides children and adults with intellectual disabilities continuing opportunities to realize their potential, develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, and experience joy and friendship. Resources include research reports, an e-newsletter, a fellowship program, and schools and youth outreach. SO also offers free health screenings and health information at local, regional, and World Games. SO's Project Unify is a school-based initiative in the United States that focuses on social inclusion, bringing youth with and without intellectual disabilities together through sports and related activities.

Special Olympics, Healthy Athletes, Special Smiles

Annotation: Special Olympics, Special Smiles is a dental screening, education, and referral program that operates under the auspices of Special Olympics (SO). One of the primary objectives is to increase the number of oral health professionals who will serve individuals with intellectual disabilities in their practices and clinics. The program is a lead component of SO's "Healthy Athletes" initiative, created to focus attention on the overall health issues facing SO athletes.

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office on Disability (HHS OD)

Annotation: The Office on Disability (OD), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), implements and coordinates policies, programs, and special initiatives related to disabilities both within HHS and with other federal agencies. The office support plans and initiatives designed to tear down barriers facing people with disabilities and encourages interaction and cooperation among federal, state, community, and private-sector partners. Program initiatives include I Can Do It, You Can Do It, a nationwide effort to ensure that children and youth with disabilities have access to health care, physical fitness opportunities, and wellness programs.

Women's Sports Foundation

Annotation: The Women's Sports Foundation is a nonprofit national educational organization that provides leadership, resources and support for women in sports. It offers a referral service, publications, reference information, sponsors conferences, provides travel and training grants and publicizes the achievements of women athletes. Publications include a newsletter, Women's Sports Experience and a catalog. Some materials are available in Spanish.
