Family Equality Council

Annotation: Family Equality Council works to ensure equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transsexual families (LGBT) by building community, changing hearts and minds, and advancing social justice for all families. Services include providing support, skills and community needed for LGBT-headed families at all stages of life; leveraging the power of LGBT families—telling stories and driving change in communities, states and across the nation; focusing public and media attention on the love, strength and contributions of LGBT families; educating members of government, schools, faith-based communities, health care institutions and other social systems about how they can promote family equality for all; promoting a proactive policy agenda that sets the standard of support for LGBT-headed families in schools, faith institutions, health care and family creation and protection; defeating or changing laws at the local, state and federal level that compromise family equality for all; and partnering with other LGBT and broader social justice organizations to provide the greatest positive impact and to maximize resources.

Gay Lesbian Medical Association (GLMA)

Annotation: The Gay Lesbian Medical Association (GLMA), formerly the American Association of Physicians for Human Rights, works to maximize the quality of health services for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people and to foster a professional climate in which diverse members are encouraged to reach their full potential. GLMA offers continuing education opportunities; funds research; advocates for administrative and legislative changes; offers online health care referrals, and produces publications, including the Journal of the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association.

Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN)

Annotation: The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) works to ensure safe schools for all students, including lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students. GLSEN focuses on three areas: (1) making anti-LGBT bullying, harassment and name calling unacceptable in America's schools; (2) engaging and empowering educators as partners in creating schools where every student can fully participate in school life; and (3) ensuring that the national agenda to create effective schools includes LGBT issues. GLSEN's Web site includes a library of news and other publications. GLSEN supports public policy agendas, sponsors public information campaigns, has a college scholarship program, holds conferences, and produces the National SChool Climate Survey.

Human Rights Campaign (HRC)

Annotation: Human Rights Campaign (HRC) is a civil rights organization working to achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Americans. Founded in 1980, HRC advocates on behalf of LGBT Americans, mobilizes grassroots actions in diverse communities, invests strategically to elect fair-minded individuals to office and educates the public about LGBT issues.

Mary-Helen Mautner Project for Lesbians with Cancer (MHMPLC)

Annotation: The Mary-Helen Mautner Project for Lesbians with Cancer is a national organization dedicated to women who partner with women/lesbians with cancer, their families and caregivers. The Mautner Project's mission is to deliver direct services and support to lesbians with cancer, their families and caregivers; educate the lesbian community about cancer; educate the health care community about the needs and concerns of lesbians; and promote lesbian health issues in national and local arenas. The project publishes a monthly newsletter; the Web site provides links to some materials in Spanish. The project sponsors conferences, and does training seminars, workshops, phone support, support groups, and community care. A list serve is also available. Training seminars and phone support are available nationwide; some services are available only in the District of Columbia metro area.

Safe Schools Coalition

Annotation: The Safe Schools Coalition, founded in 1993 as the Safe Schools Coalition of Washington, aims to reduce bias-based bullying and violence in schools and to help schools better meet the needs of sexual minority youth and children with sexual minority parents or guardians in Washington state, nationally and internationally. The coalition provides information, referral, and advocacy for students, families, and educators; and offers training, model policies from Washington state school districts, posters, reports, handouts, and a resource guide.

Trevor Project

Annotation: The Trevor Project provides crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) adolescents and young adults ages 13-24. The project makes services available by telephone, chat, text, a website, and a social networking community. Services include educational workshops and trainings; a search engine for finding local, regional, and national resources; and tools and activities to supplement suicide prevention education in group or classroom settings. Health care resources, a public service campaign, and a model school policy are also presented.
