The study used data from the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System for the period 1991 to 2013 to assess changes in the percentage of U.S. high school students reporting individual days per week of physical education attendance, any physical education attendance, daily physical education attendance, and the mean number of days of physical education attendance during an average school week.

The chart is designed similarly to a logic model allowing states and districts to visualize the resources, policies, and practices fundamental to achieving student success. Contents include seven criteria representing general areas deemed critical to the success of public schools and students (school readiness, standards and curriculum, conditions of teaching and learning, work force quality, accountability and assessments, family and community engagement, and school funding). Subcriteria (outcomes integral to closing opportunity and achievement gaps and preparing students with skills) are followed by the indicators that determine the extent to which states, districts, and schools address the criteria. Annotation: This document describes a project to collect and report population-level data to support the health of school-aged children and the impact of school nursing. Topics include data points; the process of developing a uniform data set, and data use. Step Up & Be Counted! was a 3-year data initiative (2014-2016) that was a joint venture between NASN and the National Association of State School Nurse consultants. The National Uniform School Nurse Data Set was created with 15 data elements, and data was collected from 39 states, some with 1 school district reporting and other states with 100% of the schools reporting data into a national data portal. It has been succeeded by a new initiative called "National School Health Data Set: Every Student Counts!".
