Oral Health Care During Pregnancy Expert Workgroup. 2026. Oral health care during pregnancy: A national consensus statement (rev. ed.). Washington, DC: National Maternal and Child Oral Health Resource Center, Multiple items.

Annotation: This consensus statement presents information resulting from an expert workgroup meeting held in 2011 convened by the Health Resources and Services Administration in collaboration with the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Dental Association. It contains guidance for prenatal care health professionals and oral health professionals, pharmacological considerations for pregnant women, and guidance for health professionals to share with pregnant women. The 2026 revised edition includes updates on dental amalgams, aspirin to prevent preeclampsia, and nitrous oxide.

Oral Health During Pregnancy Expert Workgroup. 2026. Tips for good oral health during pregnancy. Washington, DC: National Maternal and Child Oral Health Resource Center, 2 pp.

Annotation: This tip sheet provides information and resources to help women take care of their oral health during pregnancy. Topics include getting care, practicing good oral hygiene, eating healthy foods, and practicing other healthy behaviors. Additional topics include taking care of their infant’s gums and teeth and asking their pediatric health professional to check their infant’s mouth starting at age 6 months. The tip sheet is written in simple language and is available in Arabic, Chinese, Chuukese, English, German, Haitian Creole, Korean, Moldovan Romanian, Portuguese, Russian, Samoan, Spanish, and Vietnamese. Annotation: This issue brief provides recommendations to address barriers to accessing oral health care for children and pregnant women in New York. It describes New York's Maternal and Child Health–Improving Oral Health Integration initiative, which focuses on pregnant women and children from birth to age 40 months living in communities underserved by oral health care. Recommendations include increasing Medicaid reimbursement for oral health care provided in medical settings, adding reimbursement for a preventive care bundle for oral health professionals and for fluoride varnish applications for pregnant women, allowing medical assistants to apply fluoride varnish, and authorizing dental therapy.

Annotation: This brief offers lessons from six states on how federal Medicaid cuts result in reductions in access to oral health care for people with low incomes. Examples are provided about how cuts have restricted access to care, shifted costs from one part of the health care system to others (e.g, hospital emergency departments), and led oral health professionals to leave the Medicaid network. Information is presented on how cuts have affected California, Maryland, Massachusetts, Missouri, Oregon, and Pennsylvania.

The series is written in simple language and is available in English and in Spanish. It also discusses how to begin using fluoride varnish in a practice as well as how to keep fluoride varnish notes and how to bill for fluoride varnish application. Basic information about fluoride varnish application and information to share with parents and other caregivers is included.
