Annotation: This website includes resources designed to help primary care health professionals and others understand the etiology of dental caries and caregivers’ role in preventing caries in infants, children, and adolescents from birth to age 21. Contents include a fluoride-application training course for clinics and supplemental materials, a book for children about toothbrushing, fluoride varnish printed materials, and a fluoride varnish video for caregivers. The resources are available in English and some are available in the following non-English languages: Cambodian, French, Karen, Hmong, Oromo, Portuguese, Russian, Somali, Spanish, and Vietnamese. Annotation: This database is a searchable collection of local public policies that explicitly support community food systems. The database provides examples of local public policies that have been adopted to address a range of food systems issues including rural and urban food production, farmland protection, transfer of development rights, food aggregation and distribution infrastructure, local food purchasing and procurement, healthy food access, food policy councils, food policy coordination, food system metrics, tax reductions and exemptions for food infrastructure. Contents include local laws, ordinances, resolutions, motions, orders, and directives, as well as plans, standards, guidelines, tax exemptions and other public financing policies. Policies span different geographic regions, sizes of government, rural and urban contexts, and public issues. In addition to general information about policy type, topic, and adoption date, the database includes policy documents, or the adopted language for each policy. When available, the database also lists information about the adopting, implementing, and supporting public agencies and non-governmental organizations; funding amount and sources; and policy outcomes.

Annotation: This report presents findings from an evaluation of a pilot program to assess the oral health needs of children and families in Nebraska, and provide preventive oral health services. Contents include a program overview and summaries for each of fifteen regional and community partners who helped to administer and implement the program across the state. The summaries include data on the number and distribution of dentists and dental hygienists; the number of children seen, client visits, fluoride varnish treatments, clinic hours, community sites, and staff involved; satisfaction and referral rates; racial ethnic and age distributions; oral health status (unhealthy gums, need further care, early childhood caries); and access to oral health care (dental home, Medicaid, no dental insurance). Lessons learned, recommendations, and opportunities are also discussed. The program model and forms are provided as appendices.

Annotation: This report presents a set of 48 early childhood learning indicators and 10 emerging themes that reflect the healthy development of young children (ages 0 to 8). Based on interviews with childhood experts and a review of the literature in early children learning and related fields, the report describes a set of indicators and themes that reflect a distillation of many ongoing efforts. These reflect a broad understanding of a changing field, where the health of a whole system enables the healthy development of young children; where a common language translates into enhanced communication and coordination, and where indicators can be used to understand and address inequities across racial and cultural groups. Two examples from Bremerton, Washington and Boston, Massachusetts illustrate how childhood learning indicators can help to support collaboration on behalf of better outcomes. The report is intended to encourage thinking, conversation, and action about the potential role of indicators in supporting the healthy development of young children.

Annotation: This brief highlights evidence on the impact of maternal depression on the mother and child as it relates to the public-sector systems that serve them and discusses potential short- and long-term cost implications. This brief describes a supplemental component of the Helping Families Raise Healthy Children initiative implemented in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, which successfully implements depression screening in early intervention, develops cross-system referral processes, engages caregivers in services, and increases local capacity for providing relationship-based services by addressing many of the barriers identified in earlier stages of the collaborative’s work.

Topics include forming an effective team and making a clear plan, creating a consistent message, developing a system for assessing weight status and health behaviors, deploying a customized healthy weight plan for all individuals, aligning resources to build community capacity, and influencing polices that enable exercise and healthy eating. An online community connected to the playbook lets participants share ideas, get help, and network with others about improving their community’s health.
