Contact information is listed at the beginning of each profile to allow direct follow up with the health department. Annotation: This report gives the findings of a 1995 survey of urban maternal and child health programs to determine their participation in school health. Part I describes the survey and its major findings. Part II describes the barriers urban health departments encounter as they become involved in school health, in the categories of attitudes, resources, society, and systems. Part III describes successful initiatives. Appendices provide the survey instrument, a directory of urban MCH programs, their involvement with school-based and school-linked health centers, a list of services provided, and a list of publications/resources reviewed. The volume ends with appendices, including the survey forms, a list of responding health departments, and a directory of MCH programs and leadership.

Annotation: This directory is based on the 1990 Followup Survey of Maternal and Child Health in Major Urban Health Departments in the United States conducted by the CityMatCH Project. The directory includes current information about MCH programs in urban health departments across the country and is designed to assist public health practitioners and others who are concerned about the status of maternal and child health at the local level. Background information about the CityMatCH Project and survey methods are presented in the first chapter. An overview of survey findings across all responding health departments is given in the second chapter. The third chapter provides descriptions of successful MCH initiatives and strategies, including initiatives on prenatal care, perinatal substance abuse, infant mortality reduction, postneonatal mortality reduction, and child health. Each case study includes the following: 1) environmental and historical features, 2) demographic characteristics, 3) health status of population 4) area health resources, 5) history of the department, 6) programs and services overview, 7) personnel, funding, and budget, 8) organizational structure and administration, 9) relationships of the health department with the local, state, and federal government, and 10) personal and nonpersonal health care services. An appendix provides sample protocols of the interviews used to gather some of the information.
