Annotation: This is the second report of the Expert Committee on Rheumatic Diseases that met in Geneva in October 1956 to review the evidence on the prevention of rheumatic fever and provide practical recommendations for the development of prevention programs worldwide. The report provides an overview of rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease; describes the relationship between streptococcal infection and rheumatic fever; and provides guidance on the prevention and diagnosis of the life-threatening cardiovascular disease.
