Annotation: This report describes activities of the Pacific Basin oral health forum held on November 14–15, 2002, in Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia. Participating jurisdictions included Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the Republic of Palau, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, American Samoa, and the four federated states of Micronesia. The purpose of the forum was to (1) develop model partnerships between Head Start programs and divisions of oral health for Pacific jurisdictions; (2) share ideas, best practices, and collaborative solutions to oral health problems among young children in these jurisdictions; (3) identify strategies and key roles for stake-holders and other entities for action; and (4) develop strategic action plans specific to each participating jurisdiction in the form of model Early Head Start oral health programs, as well as to strengthen Head Start oral health programs. Annotation: This report is a compilation and analysis of a comprehensive set of health and health-related data regarding the health care systems in the six U.S. Pacific insular jurisdictions. This project was undertaken to conduct an analysis of past and present health programs, to evaluate the effectiveness of past and current programs, and to provide a data profile in each of the U.S. Pacific insular jurisdictions. The six jurisdictions are the Territory of American Samoa, the Territory of Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the Republic of Palau, the Federated States of Micronesia, and the Republic of the Marshall Islands.

Rody N. 1981. New Pacific nutrition. No place: Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, Nutrition Education and Training Program, 160 pp.

Annotation: This book discusses nutrition for children in the Pacific Islands. It is written in a clear, easy-to-understand manner and contains black and white photographs and illustrations. It covers topics such as food and the body; protein for bodybuilding and repair; carbohydrates, fats, and oils for energy and warmth; vitamins and minerals for protection from disease; breastfeeding and bottle feeding; and much more. The book includes four appendices that include the meanings of some of the words used in the book, nutritive values of some Pacific Island foods, recommended dietary allowances, and photo food charts labeled with the words for the items pictured in several local languages. Languages of the charts include English, Ponapean, Kosraean, Trukese, Marshallese, Yapese-Ulithian, and Palauan. The book concludes with an index.

Annotation: This report describes a survey of food habits in the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. The basic purpose of the survey was to provide an up-to-date evaluation of food patterns in the Trust Territory and to assess the changes that have taken place over the years with development within districts in the Territory. The report includes a description of the survey method, a background section, a discussion of previous related studies, a results section, observations about each district, a discussion, conclusions, and recommendations. Statistical information is presented in appendix tables. Three annexes include forms used in the nutrition survey, a description of the survey purpose and focus, and instructions and an introduction to the survey methods.
