Annotation: This project sought to improve the health status of women and infants on the Texas-Mexico border by maximizing utilization of health resources and improving coordination of services in both nations, as well as by enhancing binational staff development efforts. Activities included distribution of the Maternal and Child Health Resource Directory; provision of continuing education for nurses, lay midwives, and auxiliary health workers; and implementation of an exchange observation program for nurses from the United States and Mexico. Aguirre S. 1987 (ca.). Border Maternity Health Care Project [Final report]. Sacramento, CA: Health Officers Association of California, 24 pp.

Annotation: The purpose of the project was to promote early, comprehensive prenatal care for low-income Hispanic women and provide a means for health care professionals on both sides of the border to increase their knowledge of and sensitivity to the target population. The goals included improving birth outcomes in Hispanic women, increasing communication with border health providers and promoting early prenatal care along the border. Activities included meeting with Mexican state health officials, conferences and workshops, a research study, and development of materials. [Funded by the Maternal and Child Health Bureau]
